How I Started
I have always been interested in BodyBuilding & a persons physique. When I was young Arnold Swartzenegger was my favorite & was amazed how a person can get so much mass. I never tried to be that big but I worked out very often with a buddy during my high school years. We got a little bit of size on us (for our age), although we were still small as weight lifters go.
After high school my friend & I had different schedules so we were unable to work out together. I was never a member of a gym but would use the wieght set I had at home from time to time. Eventhough my working out was lowered I kept active & did mountain biking & played non-structured sports with another friend. I got more lean & lost the muscle but never got skinny since the jobs I had were physical in nature also.
Through my life over the years I slowed down some activities & ended up moving to another state away from friends & family. The job I took up in the new state was not active at all. It was a call center so I just sat all day long. I began to develop a belly & for me this was a disgrace & shame since I've Never had one until then. Eventhough I sat all day my diet was better than most but still needed a lot of work.
One day I looked at my belly with disgust & shame in myself & said "This is getting out of hand, I need to do something about this. It's Now or Never."
From that day forward I researched heavily into the updated supplements & nutirtion since what I learned before was 20 years old. I drastically cut my calorie count, started counting my carbs, protein, fat, & calories daily on every meal. I started working out slowly because it had been a while. The more I did, the more I could do and the stronger I felt. I started feeling pretty good & looking much better, more lean.
I still had a long way to go to reach my goal but kept at it with diligence. I watched my weigths increase & my muscles grow but not really noticing the obvious increase in mass until I went to work. I was working from home & went into the office for a meeting one day. While there I had several people look at me with surprise & several others commented on how fit & big I was getting. One even thought I was juicing because there was such a big difference in just a 2 month period. I got countless compliments & a couple people kept asking what I'm doing & how I'm doing it. This really boosted my ego but reminded myself to stay humble. None the less it proved I was on the right track, doing well, & getting in shape the way I hoped.
Why I Love it
Besides the obvious in improving the bodies look, I feel great. Even after a hard work out & getting totally drained, I am still ready for the day. I even work out early in the morning before going to work & it feels refreshing. On my rest days I feel lazy & unproductive like something is missing. I don't feel complete until I work out. If I stay home & do all the chores, shopping, repairs, studying with my son, etc but dont work out I still feel like I did a lot but got nothing accomplished. If I go to the gym & afterward go home & do nothing all I feel complete & as if I accomplished everything. Seems a bit backward but working out or mountainbiking have that effect on me.
The industry as a whole is great as well. It's not just about how big you can get & how defined you can be, it's underlying drive is nutrition & promoting a healthy & fit lifestyle.
I have previous experience with weight lifting & a bit on nutrition but I have become much more motivated & serious about implementing what I have learned into my daily routine & life. I have done much more extensive research, some here on BB.Com, & have learned a great deal. There is so much to know & keep in mind in nutrition & with the more I learned I see how much more important it is than I thought.
At work I get approached by my co-workers & they ask about my nutrition & what I am doing so I refer them to BB.com to start with as it is a great resource for information. I constantly get the reply "I'm not a bodybuilder" and I reply with "Neither am I." then inform them that its not for Only bodybuilders, it's a site for information & promoting a healthly lifestyle.
