I've always enjoyed being physically active. I had a six pack as a 10 year old from doing living room TaeBo sessions with my oldest sister (lmao - but seriously). I played softball for 6 years and ran cross country in high school. It wasn't until my freshman year in college that I started weight lifting - just on my own. Granted, I had very little experience and would always stick to the basic exercises like weighted lunges, leg extensions etc. NEVER did I work out my upper body. Why, you ask? Well, I always had broad, defined shoulders and was too self conscious about gaining more mass in that area since I already had a "boxy" physique (or so I thought). Now I only wish I would've started sooner!
Earlier this year (2014), I began following amazing athletes on Instagram and was overwhelmed with inspiration that I forced myself into doing the unthinkable: I was going to compete in an NPC Bikini Competition. THIS ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED ME. But I thought to myself: "Hey, you gotta get uncomfortable to get the results you've never had." So, I hired prep coaches, trained my ass off, and gave it my all. I'm so glad I did! I placed 2nd and 5th in my first competition. Not only that but I also grew stronger - both mentally and physically - by overcoming all of the personal obstacles that come with competing. It was THE hardest thing I've done in my life.
I can say that I'm completely addicted to iron (insert creepy face emoji). Here's to muscles! ;)
The feeling!
Bodybuilding has improved my entire being - mentally, physically, spiritually. It's something I can't live without. Discovering the iron and working on myself in the gym is one of the best things that's happened to me (and my husband!). I've even been able to inspire those around me to join in on the fun. It's like the gift that keeps on giving. When people see someone that's achieved something they consider unattainable they become inspired - "Wow, how did you do that!?"... followed by a series of specific questions (this just happened to me yesterday with my OBGYN - dead serious! lol). But it's something I truly enjoy. If I can help someone change their life for the better, I will die a happy woman.
I always find it refreshing when women uplift and motivate each other. It's something I strive for ALWAYS. #nonegativity
