I used to be fairly active in highschool, but once I hit college, my eating and exercise habits were thrown out the window. I gained the "freshman fifteen" and started feeling like crap. It wasn't until the end of my junior year of college that I started making changes. I started out doing the Insanity program and ran my first Tough Mudder in October of 2012. Since then I have been fairly active and maintained a weight right about 145 lbs (which is the top limit of where an ideal weight for me should be.) When I met my now boyfriend in September of 2013, I was introduced to the free-weight section of the gym. Needless to say, I was terrified. I had never really been in this part of a gym before, so the intimidation of not knowing what the heck I was doing along with the fact that I could barely curl a 10lb dumbbell really made starting difficult.
Luckily, my wonderful man kept encouraging me to go lift with him and convinced me that if I wanted to make a change, I should stop trying to do all cardio and really hit the weights. I took his advice and started Jamie Eason's LiveFit trainer in January. Since then, I have gained muscle and lost inches, although the weight hasn't changed much.
Being a medical student now makes it difficult to work out and stick to a regular diet, but with enough dedication and support, I feel confident that I can make this a life-style change that I can pass on to my future patients. :)
The confidence I have gained in the past few short months is insane. Not only am I no longer afraid of the free-weight section, but I'm not afraid to wear tank tops, spandex shorts and look at myself in the mirror while I lift all the while. It's a great confidence booster and really gives you a sense of accomplishment, especially when you start seeing results!
