I grew up in a physically inactive home where most days were spent loafing on the couch watching TV. Poor nutrition habits were learned early since my single mom worked long hours and often provided fast food for dinner, and junk food filled the cabinets! I became accustomed to using food as an emotional crutch, whether I was celebrating, feeling depressed, or avoiding conflicts. After having two boys of my own, I wanted them to see a different lifestyle...one that was active and healthy, so I vowed to get in shape. It was important for me to teach them proper nutrition, get them involved in sports, and create a foundation they could carry on for themselves after they leave home. Once I made the comittment for them, I realized what a lifestyle change I faced. It's a challenge I sometimes struggle with .....but work on it every single day!
When I first began I focused totally on cardio! I loved the adrenaline it gave me!! I built up quite a bit of stamina, but ended up forfeiting muscle mass because I wasn't balancing my exercise with weight training. I joined a gym and made friends with some of the regulars who gave me some guidance on the weight machines and I instantly LOVED IT!! Working out is a total stress reliever for me and I like the control I have over making changes to my body!! I have a lot to learn but at least I'm on my way!!!
