When I was 14, I saw my uncle, who had recently gotten really fit and jacked. I saw him after 10 years and it was for a family members wedding. I was in awe due to him looking all "Alpha". I wanted to be as jacked as him even though I was always a geek in school. Sure I played soccer and had interest in other sports, but mostly loved chilling infront of my computer or reading comics or watching TV. I was overweight and lazy and needless to say, I procrastinated on working out till I was 18. I joined the local gym and was really dazed and confused. Everybody you asked had different plans, goals, and advice for the newbie in the gym. "Do high reps...low reps...max weight...time under tension...deep breaths!" Those were the kinds of words I would hear daily, from friends, family, and random strangers in the gym. When I got accepted into university, I gained the "freshman 15"! I was at my all time high, 220 lbs. Needless to say I was fat, lazy, and felt tired all the time. It wasn't until I was 20 that I got used to the pressure of university and also my schedule was not as bad as the previous year. I would hit the gym everyday! The pump was too addicting! Did not care about DOMS, form, tempo, or rest periods. I would just go there and workout, either alone, or with whoever was free and needed a partner. Needless to say, it was a fail of a plan lol. I started heavily researching nutrition, form, and other aspects of the "fit lifestyle". I knew that I needed to make this into a lifestyle instead of a "get ripped quick" type of program. I kept researching; fitness models, training routines, the newest diets, but the problem was that I was not specific! I wanted to be jacked, ripped, and agile for sports, but I was chubby and lazy. Trying to change too much too fast, really drained me, both mentally and physically. I knew what I had to do, but I was getting lazier as exams drew near. Needless to say, I needed an incentive to really get my head into gear and change my life. The BSN 2013 Summer Shred contest was just what I needed. The prizes got me thinking, "what's the worse that could happen?" I mean if i win, then I could encourage others and would change my life for the better. And if i lost, then at the least I had changed my body for the better. This was a win-win situation and on March 14th 2013, i took my measurements and got ready to take training seriously and was ready to change my life!
My favourite quote on fitness was "get ripped, get laid." I honestly started working out to "get the ladies", but I realize now, that unless you are doing something for yourself, you will never have enough motivation to continue with the goal. I love working out because I know that day by day I am getting better, stronger, and leaner that I was yesterday. My health is my top priority, so why not get fit now, and enjoy all the foods in moderation, than be out of shape and sooner or later be forced to leave your favourite foods, just because they become deadly for you!
