I'm a Firefighter / EMT; In January of 2013, My Engine Company was dispatched to a structure fire. Long story short, at the time I was 330lbs but with the gear I was almost 400lbs. When our engine company made entry into the structure on the first floor, I was advised to find access to the basement where there was an active fire. While searching, I went through the floor into the fire room resulting in emergent transport to the local trauma center where I was admitted into the ICU. It was only a short time later I told myself I am so unfit in a job that requires physical and mental conditioning to be at its best to save other people's lives and I can't even take care of my own.. and at almost 400lbs, three other men of my crew risked theirs to save mine. My mentality quickly became I need to be fit to be able to save the lives of those in my community, my crew and my own because. Because when **** hits the fan the only thing you have is your crew and / or yourself. I joined my local "SnapFitness 24/7" for almost two years before I wanted more. Where I was, to me, was not adequate to me and I wasn't satisfied enough so I joined another much larger gym. I knew there was more I could achieve. This went from "I need to be more fit so people can count on me" to a "PERMANENT lifestyle change". I try to seek the best in everything and with this incident I have used it to learn from my mistakes, become inspirational to those around me and continue to strive to become better than I ever thought I could be each and every day.
