I've always worked out sporadically, and have had a semi-active lifestyle up until I started college, where things just fizzled and I got sucked into going out multiple times a week, eating wrong, and drinking way too much for multiple years. It took the ending of a 4-year relationship for me to realize that I had become way too complacent with how my body looked. I had love handles, low energy levels, and was pretty unhappy overall. I realized that I needed to get my life, body, and mind in shape.

The release of endorphins... for an hour or two, there's nothing else that can bother you. No worrying about what else may be going on in your life - not a messy breakup, not work problems, not anything. It's a time to worry about one rep at a time.
