Back in 2004, I was involved in a really bad car accident. The injuries I sustained from this accident led my surgeon to believe I would never be able to have full use of my right arm. I shattered my right humerus that night and had to have emergency surgery which left me with 2 plates and about 2 dozen screws in my arm. The nerve had been stretched to the point that I had to wear a brace to avoid atrophy leaving my hand useless. None the less, as soon as I could, I would rehabilitate myself using empty paint cans, small dumbbells and constant stretching. 10 years later I have about 90 use in my arm, but can not throw a football or baseball because that motion hurts too much. It literally feels like my arm will snap off. I started weight training as soon as i could to ensure I would regain the strength in my arm and I'm happy to say I have defied what my doctors said back in '04.
Training has literally filled a void, which I used to fill with binge drinking and drugs. Ever since I committed myself to training, I have really gained the discipline I was lacking for so long. I definitely feel as if I have a long way to go and a lot of muscle mass to grow before I can say I've reached my goals. Working through the injury and pain with my arm has been a challenge but it has been one that is met with determination. I honestly couldn't do it without the people I have met at the gym and the ones who support my goals.
