Born with an innate desire to live healthy and be fit. I was fortunate to have a parent that kept the fridge stocked with lots of fruits, vegetables and encouraged physical activity. My mom set the example for me and I happily followed.
The images I saw on TV were influential as well. My mom and I are both big fan of Superman. I often watched Hulk Hogan, Mr. T, Wonder Woman, American Gladiators etc. I was in awe of these good guy muscle heroes and heroines.
Growing up I was an avid runner. I loved PE and was very competitive in cross country. I would make up my own exercise routines at home.
As much as I've always loved health & fitness, as a teen I was not immune to the media and social pressures around me. Although I was 100 lbs, I struggled and focused too much on what number appeared on the scale. This was a very tough physical and emotional time in my life. Things happen for a reason and I am stronger and better because of these experiences.
In college I started reaching for the dumbells. As the 10 lb curls began to get easier, I made myself push harder and grab the 30+ lbs. Being strong feels good!
My start in competition:
I started reading Oxygen (3rd issue on) and couldn't get enough of the magazine. I've always admired the bodybuilding/figure world. I've dreamed of what that would be like. I decided I needed to create my destiny and didn't want to live the would've, should've, could've. I made the choice to try. From the moment I stepped on stage I felt this was in my blood to do.
