When I first started working out, I mainly used free weights and some machines. I did isolations, as Men's Health claimed this was the best way. After being absent from the gym for roughly a year or so, I got back in contact with a good friend of mine, and showed me the Stronglifts website. I started doing Stronglifts 5x5 in February 2013, but am switching up to Rippetoe's Starting Strength for more power and with the power, build mass. I'm looking to do this program for a half year or so and switch it up with some isolations to work the back, shoulders, arms and chest just a bit more.
I love it because I've noticed a lot of power gain since I did compounds. I used to do endless isolations but I never really got real power, although I gained some more mass. Now I'm not gaining mass as fast as I used to do with isolations, but my life has become easier because of my new strength. I'm the typical guy with a bad back because of insecurity, being tall and gaming along. Ever since I workout with a better mindset, I've noticed I'm able to do things easier, better and faster than I used to do them.
