For my 10th birthday, my Dad brought me home a weight set. I used that off and on, but really got serious for athletics in middle school.

What is the most common reason that somebody gets injured while lifting?
Improper form! There are many reasons for improper form, but the result always ends up the same. Be attentive to your technique!

I wish you success in your quest to get fit. I suggest you combine weight lifting; some form of cardio and a good nutrition plan, as you will be amazed at the changes and the speed at which they can occur. I used the Body for Life program and had great results; you might want to give it a look-see. Stay strong and believe in yourself and what you can accomplish. Give me a yell if you wish.

Right on man! My hats off to you sticking to you program. I bet your strength and endurance comes as a blessing to those people you are trying to help. EMS must be stressful but totally rewarding at times.
