18 years ago today I was standing on the corner of E116st&3rd Ave watching crowds of soot covered people make their way north from ground zero. None of us on the NYPD had a clue as to what to do or what to expect. My partner and I finally made our way south to the site and the image in this photo is burned in my memory. The sheer scale of the damage is something that could not be realized by just watching on the repeated news broadcasts.
