When I was 15 years old I decided I wanted to get stronger. Strong people inspired me like Olympians, athletes, actors. I knew there were ways of getting stronger though I didn't really know how. So I went with my instincts. I started jogging. I also started strength training or what I thought was strength training. I did push ups and silly things like lifting soup cans for hundreds of reps. Eventually I attempted making my own barbel from a beam, some bricks, and duct tape. My parents thought it was dangerous resulting in my dad giving me his old weights from high school that he kept at his parents house. A few months later I came across a 5x5 program in a Mens fitness catalog and have been doing variations of that ever since.
I love getting stronger. I don't know why it just appeals to my dominate nature as a man I guess. From a purely logical perspective I know my muscle mass will steadily decrease as I get older. For me weight training is a way to slow that process down. Its just another thing I do for my health. You wouldn't say brushing your teeth is unnecessary or vain would you? Well neither is lifting weights. When you don't use it you lose it. An aesthetic body is a by product of a healthy one.
