I got started in Bodybuilding at about 18 tears old in HS. At the time I did not know anything about how to exercise or what to eat so I decided to find the most comprehensive all in one material I could get my hands on. At the time the internet was in it's infancy so there was no google to help with the research process. I ended up subscribing to every bodybuilding magazine that was out there. I Remember when I received my first issue of Flex magazine. In it I came across an article written about Arnold Schwarzenegger and his application of the Weider Principles. I read through the entire article and that was all the inspiration I needed. And so, my Journey began.
I believe you need to find that thing in life that makes you feel alive, that gives you a sense of purpose. For some people that might be playing their favorite sport or participating in extreme sports. For others it might simply be the daily grind of providing for their families.(Though this could also be one of life's greatest stresses.) For me working out is what gives my day purpose. I will admit it hasn't always been this way as I have had to adapt and prioritize certain things in the last 20+ years. However everything in life feels like work except working out ironically. It has become as automatic to me as brushing my teeth or taking a shower. It is now part of a routine that I look forward to everyday. I spend most of my day interacting with friends, family and work colleagues. My only alone time is when I am in the Gym wearing my headphones and grinding out rep after rep in my own little world. It's an inner peace that is difficult to describe to anyone who isn't into the fitness lifestyle.
I wish everyone could experience that. It takes time to get there as beginnings are always difficult. But, once you are there, nothing in the world feels quite like it.
