I attended Chatsworth senior high school. While attending, I was a shy, reserved, and possessed both low confidence and self-esteem. I never participated in class discussions for fear of being judge. When people looked at me, I thought it was because I was doing something wrong. It wasnt until I attended CSUN, where my perceptions changed.
We all have heard about the freshman 15. If not, it is the weight college students gain, 15 ponds, from the newfound freedom in college, and over indulge in fast food due to the easy access. For me it was the sophomore 20. I never noticed how fat I got until I saw a picture of myself at a fundraiser from work. One of my managers gave me a 24 free day pass to 24 Hour Fitness. This was the start of a new me.
Initially I thought the gym was for gay boys and cheerleaders. Before any one feels offended, I use the derogatory term because of my ignorance at the time. My experience with the gym has taught me numerous life skills, such as dont be quick to judge. A major one being time management. Working full time, being a full time student and making time for the gym to get results isnt all too easy. Secondly, the gym was a place for people to relief stress and better themselves, not those with image issues.
Throughout the years, I have transformed my body, after receiving compliments about my improvements, my head got big and my confidence rose exponentially.
With this newfound confidence, I have been able to enhance my relationships with others by speaking up for myself and participating more in class. The gym has also humbled me at times. No matter what, there will always be someone to correct your form, lift heavier, or have a better physique of the goal you are trying to accomplish.
The gym for most is something they do during the week, or make it a hobby. I have made it a lifestyle. It is much more than just weights, cardio machines, and creeps checking themselves out in the mirror and taking selfies. It is a place to find out more about yourself, relief yourself of daily life like school or work, catch up with friends, or practice shaking you hips in Zumba class.
