I played hockey in high school and needed to add some mass to be competitive. So I really focused a lot of attention my lower body, which is pretty unusual for guys at that age who tend to spend a lot of time on the bench. I was in decent shape once I hit college, but in my late 20s I realized I needed to add better over-all body mass and muscle. I started trained initially to pull off some body fat I had put on, but in the end, loved the muscle I was gaining. From that point on, I was hooked.
I've played team sports, but at my core, I'm extremely "self-competitive." Bodybuilding is one of those activities where I can hit the gym and hold no one but myself accountable for my success or failure. I run a 18+ size team in my day job, with a lot of responsibility for other people and their drive, passion and productivity. Working out gives me an opportunity to rise or fall completely on my own motivation, talent and drive, which is really motivating.
