I was born with High Functioning Autism, as well as low muscle tone. As someone with High Functioning Autism, I can go about my day to day tasks in a mostly normal fashion, but I struggle with some tasks (cooking, cleaning etc.). These difficulties along with my numerous food allergies (I can't have Gluten, Dairy, Peanuts, Tree Nuts or Bananas), can make it difficult for me to eat as healthily as well I should. However, my biggest issue has always been low muscle tone. I have never been able to do so much as a push up, in fact it's quite painful for me to even try. I've never been able to walk any sort of long distance. Until I started working out, I couldn't even make it up the stairs in my home with being almost completely out of breath.
I got started, after I came back from my first trip to Disney World. My family had spent more then a week pushing me around in a wheelchair because I couldn't make it through the parks. I was a perfectly healthy teenager, stuck in a wheelchair because I lost my breath too easily. Within a few weeks of getting home, I had pulled my old bike out of the shed (it had been too small for me for several years by this point) and started riding it. After riding daily for a couple of weeks, I finally started to see real change. To be quite honest, I felt like a new person. I know it's kind of sad but for me, but the first time I noticed a real change was when I first realized I could make it up the stairs without being out of breath. That tiny little accomplishment, nearly reduced me to tears.
