I first went to the gym to lose my beer belly. I was 13.5stone (189lbs / 86kg), and set myself a goal to lose 1 stone, so I would look leaner.
I lost the weight quite quick and easilly, I just stopped drinking alcohol, and did some cardio, but then got bored of the gym. So as I'd achieved what I set out to do, I cancelled my fitness centre membership, but ha to give 2 month cancellation notice. It was here where things really started for me, I thought I'd go out with a bang and try and gain size. So as I was now down to 12.5stone (175lbs / 79kg), I decided (unrealistically) to try and get up to 15stone lean, with appox 10% bodyfat. When I set the goal, I didn't know what was involved, and how much time this would take.
Only when I then started studying nutrition more, did I realise I needed approximately 2 years for this goal, not the two remaining months of my fitness centre membership. So I started looking for a better gym, one with more free weights, and one that was open 24/7, so I never had an excuse to miss a workout.
I'm currently (as of May 2016) 9 months into my goal, and have now gone upto 15stone 3lbs (214lbs / 97kg), while maintaining a similar bodyfat ration of between 22 to 25%. I'm enjoying going to the gym now, rather than seeing it as a chore, like I used to previously.
