When I Started:
May, 2008
How I Started:
I was born premature and suffer from cerebral palsy, amongst other things, so this obviously had an affect on my build and physical strength. It does mean my lifting progress is slower than the average person & I'm probably hampered slightly from being born so early but that won't stop me from trying to make the best with what I've got :)
I picked up the weights because I was tired of being weak and not very physically able and wanted to do something about it.
Why I Love It:
I was eating disordered throughout my early and teenage years and though I don't have a problem with eating anymore I've always had a negative body image. Weight training and learning about proper nutrition has really helped with that. But most of all I love the feeling of getting stronger and increased self-esteem.
Lifting weights has made me stronger, therefore more independant which is a big thing for me: I used to struggle just to take the bins out and carry shopping bags. Also being remotely disabled seems to = need help with everything & can't do alot of things myself in most people's eyes and I like being able to challenge that view ;)
How I Stay Motivated:
I find when I get bored I can lose motivation so changing the days and order of my workouts helps. I worry about losing muscle mass and strength - no way do I want to go back to being a twig :P Working out helps me keep my depression at bay.
BB Accomplishments:
None as I don't plan on competing. However I feel I've come a long way mentally: namely beating my eating disorder and body image issues.
Since I started training seriously I've gained 13lbs so far this year (and more importantly been ok with that) put nearly 4" on my arms, 3.5" on shoulders, lost 2" off my waist plus my butt no longer says hi to the back of my thighs - off to a good start I think!
If I was a guy I'd want to look like him :) Very driven and dedicated man - not just to the iron but to his family and country too, that in itself is inspiring. Always very respectful and encouraging, someone I look up to. Just an all round *decent* guy really ^_~ (but damm I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of him in a fight haha)
What supplements do you take immediately after your workout? Why?
Protein shake with glutamine, BCAAs and creatine.

Do you have any type of chronic disease or condition?
Yes
What is it?
Visual impairment, cerebal palsy, ataxia, balance, coordination and posture issues.
How does fitness help you with your condition? What do you have to do differently in your program since you have this condition?
It's helped me become more stronger, mobile and less fragile.
I probably increase the weight in smaller increments than the average person, I have difficulty with things like squats and any exercise that requires bending the arms but thankfully there are ways round or alternatives for most of them. It's helped me become more stronger, mobile and less fragile.

one year on..how things have changedIt's been one year today since I signed up to bodyspace so I thought I'd do a post to commemorate and take stock of where I'm at.
I remember when I first started I was terrified to put any photos up, mostly due to feeling inferior to everybody else on...
Vicki, it is so impressive and amazing to see what you have accomplished this last year. Knowing the challenges you must overcome, and how hard you have worked it is simply humbling to see the wonderful results. Your latest pic shows not only a lean physique but one that is stronger and more muscular. A sincere congratulations for all that you have accomplished!!
Your welcome! You look awesome, and you're doing great! Keep up the good work. Bench and deadlifts are tough for me too. I would much rather go for a 10 mile run than do those lol!
you are VERY welcome! hey, i was watching House Hunters International, last night, and they were in Edinburgh, Scotland! That place looked awesome!! My neighbor here in Georgia is from Scotland, too ... I love talkin to her ... she loves making fun of how I talk, too lol
That is cool!! I took the day off and went to play golf. Had a miserable day on the course. But, I had fun. Will probably do some treadmill walking tomorrow. How was ur day???
Hey there :). I'm doing well, not much going on. I like your new profile picture AND your recent progress pictures. You look great, keep up the good work!
ahh yeah that is annoying, good job u put them up before! I must admit you've inspired me to think about taking some creative pix... and I did, but I'm not brave enough to upload em lol. hmmm we'll see
wow great progress pix! u have a seriously hot bod girl. Love the profile pic- v.creative, and the abs look good. Yeah might have the scrap the leave a comment thing lol.
I use to hate cardio myself. But, being in the military, it kinda grows on ya. Wow, give me a cup of coffee and I'd probably hit the roof. I know my energy level would be off the chart drinking one cup. How is ur day going so far??
That sounds good!! I just started back on my heavy lifting program and adding more cardio to the program. Did 40 minutes of continuous running this morning for PT and was having way too much fun running. What are you doing for workout tomorrow?
I just dropped by to say that you look absolutely fantastic! You have overcome a lot and developed your body using dedication and determination. You are a fantastic inspiration to others, especially me. I wish you nothing but success in all that you do. Stay strong, focused and determined & may God bless.
I was literally laughing out loud at ur blog reply. 15 yr olds who want gastric bands? bit lazy i'd say. So whose giving u stick then on here? Ive not come across that. Hmmm very strange.
ahhh just realised I didnt reply to u! New bf eh? wooo sounds fun :) As for him maybe not liking more muscle- to be honest, muscle gains develop gradually so its not like he will notice suddenly. Does he know u lift or it is still early days to divulge all the info? lol. When r ur new prog pix going up? xx
