Usually keep it around 8. Just seems to be the right number for me. I don't think set and rep count can be "cookie cutter". Everyone's body responds differently.

How long do you rest between sets on average? Why?
As little as possible. Maybe 1-2 minutes. I can't stand cardio (bores the shit out of me) so I try to keep my heart rate up lifting as much as possible. What mistakes did you make when you first started working out?
Not focusing enough. I since have learned to get "in the zone" and block out everything else around me. It is my zen.
