Welllll...to be honest I first lifted in college around 1987. But I always prioritized work over everything else in my life (dumb). So for 20 years I would get in the gym for a few months, then stay out for half a year or more. Over and over. In April 2006, just before I turned 41, I started back and stayed focused. I have been consistent about lifting, rest, and diet since then. And because I was *totally* out of shape at the time (about 290 lbs of flabby, no muscle self), I consider that my new starting point.
Why I Love It:
Lots of reasons! I like the sense of community among my gym buddies. The health benefits alone of fit versus obese are a great reward. They way I look is important (okay, I admit I can be vain).
How I Stay Motivated:
I have a network of gym buddies who take the sport seriously. I spend time on some boards--not a lot of time to spare. I read MD. I remember what being obese was like.
