When I Started:
Mar, 2006
How I Started:
Back in 2003 I hit about 150 lbs; out of shape with very little muscle, as I had never weight trained before. I realized I was starting to look flubby, and that I was living an unhealthy lifestyle. I started doing cardio (outside or on my parents tredmill), crunches, and push-ups first; I also cut out soda and eating crap all the time. I did this for a good while, and I joined the gym for the 1st time in my life about 8-9 months before I got married Oct. 2004. Unfortuanately I broke my ulna 3 months before my wedding, so I shrunk down from a healthy 135 lbs to 128 lbs. Once my arm was ready I was back to lifting very light, b/c I fell victim to the myth of lifting light will get ya ripped! Hahaha, funny, eh? I stayed at around 130 lbs until finally after some research I realized if I wanted to look the way I wanted I needed to start really training and eating optimally! Going to the gym 3x a week for 30-45 min, and barely breaking a sweat wasn't gonna do the trick. March 1, 2006 was when I decided I would seriously start to change my body and reach my goals. This is when I actually applied myself to my diet and pushed myself in the gym. March 2006 was truly when I started bodybuilding or lifting weights with the intentions of gaining muscle.
Why I Love It:
God has given me my body as a gift, and it is for His glory and honor that I take care of my body. I do love the feeling I get after I complete an intense workout... I feel like I've done something good for my health and the physical appearance of my body as well.
How I Stay Motivated:
I like having my wife think I look good... although I gotta be careful... she says if I get too big she won't be attracted to me :) I really love training now. What started out as a chore has become something I enjoy and look forward to everyday. It's part of my life.

March 1, 2006... 130 lbs - This is when I decided I was gonna try to change my body. With the 3 skin fold caliper test I was 7.9% here, hahaha... way too low! According to the Navy body fat method I was 14% bf... sounds about right.
164 lbs (163.5 lbs on avg for this week)
13.8% BF (on avg for this week according to Omron); 12.2% BF w/ 7 site caliper test; 11.7% BF w/ TMM
I'm posting this b/c I wanted to update that I have been carb cycling for 3 weeks now, and also taking 10 grams of creatine/day. In 3 weeks I have los ...

Goal (Long):
My long term goal is to be around 7-8% body fat and be as muscularly developed as my body can naturally be, and, of course, be healthy. I plan on being a personal trainer / dietician, so I should have the type of body that reflects what I plan on teaching others. God has blessed me with a body, so it is my duty to be a good steward of what He has given me. I also intend on helping my wife and son/children in their journeys of being fit and healthy.
Now, this is somewhat of an experiment... I did this calculator that has "some" research behind it, and it gave me my Estimated NATURAL Max-Muscular Potential weight at ~8-10% bf and the following measurements based off of my 6.75" wrist, 8.5" ankle, and ht of 66":
Weight: 178 lbs ~10% body fat
Chest: 44.9 in, Biceps: 16.3 in,
Forearms: 13 in, Neck: 15.9 in,
Thighs: 23.7 in, Calves: 15.9 in.
So, this is my LONG TERM Goal now above. I am currently ~28 lbs away from this goal! I will likely never fully reach these measurements or it will definitely take anywhere from 5 - 10 yrs from now (Aug. 2009). I may update every year. Also, I think it will be cool to have this here for if/when I ever do come close to/meet/exceed these above measurements.
Seriously, when I was 1st getting the ball rolling with this bodybuilding thing, I came across Marc's profile, and was just blown away by his conditioning and aesthetics. Truly and awesome build, and a knowledgeable guy too.
What mistakes did you make when you first started working out?
I didn't lift heavy enough. I didn't push myself at all. i started going to the gym to get lean. I believed the myth that I'd get "bulky", so I didn't lift heavy at all. I did high reps and barely pushed myself with that. I eventually learned how to train properly and also got the desire to get bigger :)I didn't lift heavy enough. What is the one tip you would give somebody who is just getting started?
Learn proper form and control. Then push yourself with every rep and every set. Eat right and be consistant with diet and training. Enjoy life along the way too ;) Your health and appearance will benefit from your hard work :)Learn proper form and control. Then push yourself with every rep and every set. I wish so bad I had read this back in the Fall of 2006 when I started out on my bulking phases that ended up with me at 180 lbs ~20% bf in January 2008. I would have never made such an awful mistake as that. I probably...
Currently the goal is 235 lbs but actually I want single digit... like 5-7% body fat by summer. Whaterver weight I am, I don't care... just want the single digit!
Sounds like you have a game plan bro and as long as you remain on the right track, you will make it happen! So how are you going to keep track with your lifts? Strenght wise? And specific workout regiment in mind?
OMG that pie sounds delicious =) Me and Chris have to pick up dessert to take to my parents on thanksgiving and I have my eye on a chocolate/Pb cake...I've been looking at it since my show and now I have the perfect excuse for it!
You are learning so much about your body and if competing has taught you anything, its how truely unique we all are...to hell with all the 'experts' and do what works for YOU!!! End of my rant =) this was so long...I should ahve just left it in your journal LOL!!!
OK..checked your journal and I think if you training is going well and you think you are looking 'better' then just keep doing what you're doing! The scale can have so many variables. I totally agree with you on not having to put on fat when gaining! Sure a little will happen but there is no need to gain 15lbs in a month..you cant gain muscle that fast!!!
I figure that is a solid goal that I can maintain...I love the holidays way too much to not enjoy myself, I just cant get carried away ;-) BRB...going to check your journal!
My back is feeling awesome =) I'm taking it easy on the deads just to be on the safe side, other than that I'm good to go!!! My diet has been better but with the holidays coming up its going to be rough...my plan is to make it to Jan 1st at 115lbs (10lbs above comp wt). That should be doable ;-) How is the cut going?? Are you happy with things?
Yep, in 2006 I begin to take this lifestyle seriously. You know, my New
Years resolution and all. Thanks man but I see only body parts that need work -neither big enough, strong enough or defined enough. (not fishing for comps) ...Anyway, you're doing your thing bro - lookin & livin the life of a b'builder. Plus you've stepped on stage, gotta luv that. Keep making me proud my brutha!
Thanks for the kind words, Joe. You have a good overall physique. Your back is coming along well, which in my opinion, can be the hardest thing to build. Congrats on your placing in your first show. I loved the energy in your routine.
No MRI or anything...I work for a chiro so shes been working with me. The pain doesnt travel so thats a plus...Its actually feeling really good today so HOPEFULLY its a sign of good things to come! My doc is cute...she told to me lower the weight and increase the reps!! LMAO that is so not happening :)
WOW you are busy...all that and a daddy/husband too! I thought I told you...but I guess not, I tweaked my back about a week and a half ago doing deads :( It was really bad last week but its getting better each day. I'm playing it smart and working around it. Joe gave me some stretching exercises and the doc I work for has been adjusting/stretching me out so its definitely improving!!!
No biggie...I know how busy life can get! Do you work AND go to school full time? Things are ok here with me...still working on the diet ;-) Training heavy BUT smart as my back is starting to feel better...I just dont wanna push it too soon. Oh the joys of cutting..I'm so jealous :) Just remember not to make too many changes!
