Overall Goal: I want to continue getting defined cuts of muscle separation. Progression at bench press would be awesome.

When I Started:
Feb, 2004
How I Started:
I walked off nearly 20 pounds of weight over the first two years or so of living in Boston. A stressful, horrible relationship during summer session and 8 classes, combined with questionable diet choices and little to no money for bus or train fare helped me also drop from a size 8 to a 2. I didn't notice the change until my pants fell off (literally) in front of a friend passing by a crowded restaurant. It was like an invisible pantsing, but still not enough of a kick to get me into a gym. Fast forward to February 14,2004. I told a trainer shilling for memberships that I wouldn't join their club unless the other (in excellent shape) trainer would juggle the oranges (bait, IMO) for at least 30 seconds, or I would walk away. Instead I walked into the gym on February 16,2004.
Why I Love It:
I was that kid who was a walking medical file since birth. I still have some health issues that will still need sorting out in the near future. But technology will help me find more solutions, I hope. I've progressed rapidly with weight lifting and have never been this physically strong in my life so far. Working out in a bodybuilding style wasn't something I expected to enjoy so much. It keeps me extremely focused and in better control of my health.
How I Stay Motivated:
Trying to vary my workout when things get stale helps. Having a few friends, and seeing other regulars on the days I train is great.
BB Accomplishments:
Squatting 165 pounds; Deadlifting 175 pounds; Leg Pressing 240 pounds.

Goal (Long):
I have a high metabolism and plan to gain and keep on three more pounds of muscle. I'm still going in the opposite direction as far as a weight goal of 113 pounds. I may cut down to 104 pounds, the weight I started training at and had an almost visible six pack. I may compete someday.
What mistakes did you make when you first started working out?
Having a personal trainer that was very inattentive.
Using machines only.
Too many sets and reps, being afraid to go up in weight.
Doing cardio when angry.
Training too often.
Not eating enough, or on some days, eating too much before hitting the gym.
Bad form on some freeweight exercises.

What is the one tip you would give somebody who is just getting started?
Do your research on proper exercises and how your body should realistically move. I have no use for a Swiss ball or ridiculous combinations of hopping squats on a BOSU ball. If it sounds crazy to you, tell your under informed "trainer" that you won't compromise your safety! Nobody is going to force you to herniate a disc but YOU. Back day was pretty awesome. I got up to the 35s for the DB rows for the first time today! I plan to stay at that weight for at lest two more workouts, maybe three...
Hey Skiz, thanks for the gym tips. It looks like the old Gold's is now The Sports Club. There appear to be a couple 24-hour mini-gyms cropping up in the area. Thanks again & best of luck with your training! al
Haha. I actually had about a 1/2 jar of PB with ice cream. I'm still 178-179ish. I think I've hit bottom, minus the water weight. Sorry to hear about the band situation.
