I look for people with starting similar stats to myself and see how well they've done. It reminds me that what I'm aiming for is achievable and gives me an idea of what I can expect when I get there! I also set small achievable goals in sensible timeframes.

This was taken when I started. I didn't realise that I was so soft and flabby!
I could convince myself there there's a change here. My waist is more defined and there's definitely less of a muffin top around the waistband of the bikini pants.
My goal is to complete a 10k race in an hour and to have finally shed my studying weight.
Goal (Long):
I've been unfit for the last five years. I gained a lot of weight in my first year of university and have struggled to shift it since. When I started working I realised that I didn't have the stamina even get around work. If the lifts weren't working it was four floors of stairs and it used to leave me gasping for breath.
At the end of the first four months I moved to a different division with better hours and discovered a weight lifting class at my gym. I really enjoyed going and was impressed by the fitness of those going to the class for several months. I realised that there was nothing to stop me getting in shape apart from laziness.
This year, I've set myself a goal of completing a 10k in an hour of less and in the process of the training, finally shedding those excess pounds I gained at university.
Do you tell your friends and/or family about your fitness goals?
No
Why or why not?
Well, my fiance knows that I go to the gym and that I'm trying to be more healthy. I haven't told my friends because either their not interested in keeping fit or they are but are in the run up to their final exams of university and are concentrating on studying. I feel that if I went on and on about how great my workout was going it would only make them more miserable with all the time they have to spend studying.
My family will learn I've been doing more to keep fit because there should be an obvious difference when they next see me and I'll be running in a local 10k later in the year. What is the one tip you would give somebody who is just getting started?
Don't expect massive gains quickly. Expect to have to work for about eight weeks before there is any change in your appearance. Also, take progress photos. You look at yourself in the mirror every day and will miss the gradual change, which will make you despondent. Have something for a comparison. Don't expect massive gains quickly. Finally did my 10k! Finished in 1:03! I'm really pleased with that. I'm aiming to do the next race in September in less than a hour.
For the next two weeks I'm taking a break from running. My sports bra is giving me awful friction burns and I need to let the skin heal. I'm off into town...
Three times per week, but with more runs added in as we get into racing season.
-Run 5km. Planning on running a 5km race soon and then a 10km later. I'm hoping to increase the distance over the next few months and also the speed. At the moment I'm running 5km on the track in 35mins and...
Hey, just had a look at your progress pictures, there's definitely some improvement there so well done :) I've only been doing this for a few weeks so I'm not holding out for anything just yet.
Aw dang, I really feel for you...I started this 90 program like three times now--the first week I came down with such a sinus head cold, I couldn't do anything and feel good about it. Do take some time off for yourself at this point and don't feel guilty about it. I actually used my time off to recollect and came back really strong. Plus, you don't want to prolong your sickness either. Get well soon!
Hey thanks...you first one too huh? Sounds like it just takes that first one to get over the jitters of it...good luck this weekend! Let me know how you do.
