In high school I had a growth spurt making me 6'1" and skinny. I was very active though, I loved basketball, full field soccer and I was on the varsity swimming team. I used weights to try to gain weight, muscle and strength for sports. I served 4 years in the Navy, from '71-'75, in HC-3, a helicopter combat support squadron, and I'm a Vietnam vet. I've gone through different degrees of exercise over the years, but in 2003 I committed to losing weight, building muscle and functional strength. I've been on track since then. Besides the health benefits, it's helped with a back problem.
Why I Love It:
I've come to enjoy working out. I have lost over 20 pounds, and a work related back problem has been much improved.
How I Stay Motivated:
Seeing what I've been doing hasn't been a wasted effort. But I think the biggest benefit has been strengthening my back so I can do my work and things I love like hiking and nature photography. I look better. I feel better.
BB Accomplishments:
Knocking off 23 pounds. Not only has it been beneficial body image wise, but my knees really appreciate it,
To get to 210 lbs. by the end of this year. To get my power walking mile under 19 min. Keep progressing with my resistance workouts.
Goal (Long):
I've been working to get a more classic build. One guy I'd love to be built like was Tony Sansone. I've given up on looking like Steve Reeves. I've been studying and using old training techniques. So functional strength, endurance, and a lean athletic build is more of what I'm after. I'm at 210-215 lbs now & want to get to 205. I want to lose the fat pad around my navel.
I've got to know Marls, and correspond with him, and I'm glad to call him a friend. He achieved his physique in an atypical manner, body weight, self resistance and isometric exercises. It can be done. He got his pro card last year. We have a somewhat similar philosophy in training, I'm not an apparatus free purist like him. He's dedicated to his training methods, and has been able to compete in a world of iron pumpers.
Ava is a great example of a goal setter that achieves them. The most amazing thing is the relatively short period of time she has been able to turn her life around and then be very successful in her fitness and figure career endeavors. A true professional, and down to earth person. I'm also impressed that, no matter how hard she is working on something, she always responds to a comment.
I sold all of my weights except for 2 pairs of light dumbbells. I use Lifeline's chest expander, and Bodylastics. I do 3 resistance workouts a week. They are whole body workouts. I use the Reg Park course for the chest expander work. Bodylastics can be used as any cable or free weight work so I can follow routines that will help me where I'm at and what I want to do at the time.I sold all of my weights except for 2 pairs of light dumbbells. that 19 is getting close! I took a week off from walking due to illness, but did 5 miles on the treadmill today in 69 minutes. Not trying for speed but getting the distances in for endurance.
Good job!!! Thanks for the compliment...love my ed hardy shades! Working hard these days with intervals...got the tread at a 8-12 incline running 2 minutes at a time...butt kicker! Glad your doing well!
one thing I've learned with age is to put the testosterone on hold. :) It takes wayyy too long to mend from breaks these days. LOL. I'm hoping to one day do a 1/2 marathon averaging 12 min miles (walking). I've gotten close (under 13min miles) but have slacked off in the past couple of yours. :(
good luck with your walking .... how long are the distances that you do? Is there a particular technique you're trying to do or is it how fast and how far in a certain amount of time?
the shoot was soooo incredible and the shots looked better than i could ever imagine! It was worth all the 12 weeks of hard work and now i realise that im much stronger -willed than i thought.
i will get the pics back in 3 weeks, cant wait! This weekend:food!!
