When I Started:
Aug, 2000
How I Started:
The Army got me started working out. It was new for me and quite a shock to my system, but I got good at it quick. It wasn't until 2005 that I was taught that there was more to fitness than push-ups, sit-ups, and running.
Why I Love It:
Because it isn't easy. I joined the Army right out of high school, and everything I had done until then had been easy. I was a nerd gifted with musical talent and a brain for math/science, so I could do those and be the best at them without any real effort. When I joined the Army I was introduced to physical training. I wasn't naturally good at it like everything I was into before. Actually I was pretty bad at it. I needed a lot of work just to get to average. But I learned the joy and reward of having to work for something. With the right attitude and a lot of work I could be the best again dammit.
How I Stay Motivated:
I outgrew the need to be better than everybody else. Now all I need is to be better than myself.

I want my wife's jaw to hit the floor the first time she sees me naked after I get home from Iraq.
Goal (Long):
For the first twenty three years of my life I thought I was small and meant to stay that way. I was 5'7" and 130 lbs. I could do 80 push-ups and 85-90 sit-ups in two minutes each and run two miles in 12 minutes, exceeding the Army physical fitness standards, so I was happy. In 2005 at the beginning of my second deployment one of my friends was looking for a lifting partner and absolutely insisted that it should be me. What the heck, ya know. I didn't have much going on anyway. I was clueless and intimidated the first time, but I took to it quickly. Before that year was up I had gained almost forty pounds of muscle. I was a different person. While I was home I really let my training go. I maybe made it to the gym three times a month. I still weigh the same as when I got home from Iraq last time, but it's soft and mostly hanging around my waist. Now I have roughly twenty pounds of fat to lose, maybe more. And I know that I can replace that and more with muscle. I'm a soft 175 lbs now, and I will be a hard 180-185 within nine months. Then I'm going to keep it there.
Do you tell your friends and/or family about your fitness goals?
Yes
Why or why not?
I talk to my wife about where I am with my goals because it helps her stay motivated to reach her goals.

What tips would you give to others to help them stay motivated over the long-term?
F*** motivation! Either you're going to do something or you're not. If you can't give me a good reason not to do it then I'm going to get you off your ass to go do it. It's enthusiasm that you're worried about, and that will take care of itself once you let it.F*** motivation! Either you're going to do something or you're not. What do you do before your workout to get motivated and energized?
Plan my workout. I determine how I'm feeling that day and my relative capabilities, then I figure out how to use that to my advantage. Just thinking about it can start my blood rushing and on a really good day I get a bit of a pump on my walk to the gym.Plan my workout.
