Fit tip: I see guys doing super heavy dumbbell and barbell shrugs all the time hoping to get meaty traps. Honestly it's not optimal for stimulating growth in my book, what it is great for is putting extra compression on your spine leading to back issues down the road. Two of my favorite trap exercises which don't have the negative effects on the spine is Overhead trap shrugs and incline dumbbell Y shape shrugs. They both allow for maximum contraction and time under tension, without the negative compression of the spine like traditional shrugs.
