When I Started:
Jun, 1974
How I Started:
I started back in the day when lifting was weird, the magazines were even weirder, "athletes" still smoked. I started because I was a very, very skinny kid who needed to defend himself and put some muscle on.
Why I Love It:
I've rarely missed a month or two for over 30 years and I am married to a beautiful woman who is interested in longevity, fitness, fun, travel, wine, and all the fun stuff... I don't really lift heavy, and I think that I probably lifted the first 15 years incorrectly with bad form. I love the feeling of health and energy. Now that I am 50 I love the look I get from people of all ages when I tell them that I am fifty. With a great pair of large sunglasses to hide the wrinkles I enjoy it more. Staying strong has benefited my overall health. I travel a lot, both domestically and internationally and I have no issues with my back, and I bounce back quicker than most people half my age.
How I Stay Motivated:
My father died at age 59. Lifelong smoker, career soldier, who lived a horrible decade before he died. This is a huge motivator, as is my wife who is also a weekend workout partner, and tremendously strong cyclist. I love health and fitness, love doing it, reading about it. I love health food, hate crappy main stream food and I hate missing a workout. I lift every morning, my alarm goes off at 5:30 AM and I hit it hard and work a long day. It's a great habit and a great hobby to hand off to your kids. My youngest one is now in College and he lifts regularly for the same reasons. He loves it. Fitness provides a balance to a highly sedentary lifestyle. Amendment: My wife is getting up with me three days a week for my 5:30AM gym sessions.
BB Accomplishments:
Habitual longevity. I only take supplements and I try to eat healthy. My first set of weights were plastic encased concrete from Sears catalog, and I tried to learn from a few old magazines. Today with multiple gyms in every town, it's an easy habit and fun hobby to pick up. Go for it!
Taken 2007 - I would like to work around various over use injuries and firm up my core and improve my shoulders, traps and I would like the work on my legs and calves. My overuse injuries include shoulder, knees and plantar fascitus. I am 50.
Enjoyed your profile & blog today. I want to be like you when I grow up (will be 47 next mth). Good job slogging through this morning. My profile/blog motto: JUST GETTING TO THE GYM IS A SUCCESSFUL WORKOUT.
Looking great there. Im trying to get to where you are. And yes I had a set of the concrete sears weights. They said Ted Williams on them at least the ones I had did. Dont remember what happened to mine. Take care.
i didnt think they were really needed im not one for putting chemicals into my body. your advice is very much appreciated as all this stuff is baffling to me
