When I Started:
Sep, 1993
How I Started:
I started working out when I joined the high school cross country team. That was also when I figured out that I loved running. I also played soccer, basketball, badminton, and joined the dance company. I became a four sport varsity athlete. My senior year was when I created my first 10 mile race in 1 hour and 38 minutes.
When I graduated, I attended the U.S. Naval Academy where I graduated in 2001. While a midshipman, I was a cheerleader, a member of the Drum & Bugle Corps, and on the Powerlifting team. It was on the Powerlifting team when I found out how much fun lifting weights could be. During my senior year, I ran my second 10 mile race in a time of 1 hour and 41 minutes.
Why I Love It:
I love working out for a few reasons. I like to feel strong and working out definitely gives me that. I also like the feeling you get when you've finished a workout and everything seems much clearer than when you started. Mostly, I like to be able to show other people, and myself, that flat feet, a knee injury, and exercise-induced asthma are no reason to hold you back from being fit.
How I Stay Motivated:
I stay motivated by reading Oxygen magazine, reading about fitness and wellness, and watching sports and fitness programming.

They will be coming!

My fitness goal is to gain 5-10 pounds of muscle and get my body fat down to 15-20%.
Goal (Long):
All of my life I have been athletic and stayed in pretty good shape. Before I left the Navy in 2004, I was in good shape at 115 lbs, but I failed to keep up good habits when I moved back to Baltimore. Slowly the weight came and surpassed my previous high weight of 145 lbs to arrive at a 195 lb high last fall.
I tried Weight Watchers twice and lost a little bit of weight, but the inner athlete could not be content with just walking and the little emphasis placed on physical activity.
In the meantime, I went back to school and was told for the first time I had to lose weight by a doctor. The first goal I set and will achieve in October 2007 is to run my first marathon. I have always been a runner, but never ran a marathon. My first will be the Baltimore marathon on October 13, 2007. I also decided that I want to be a personal trainer and help other people lose weight. I can only do that if I am fit as well. So, I plan to reduce my waist size to 36" or less by August and have lost 25-30 pounds. By this time, I should also be ready to get certified as a personal trainer. By the end of 2007, I plan to have lost another 40 pounds depending on how much I have lost by August. I desperately want to be at my goal weight by December 31, 2007.
I also, during this time, want to reduce my body fat to 15-20% and reduce my waist size to 24" or less.
Yeah, I'm from Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand. How's your running going? I'm not much of a runner myself, I find it too hard on my legs - maybe it has something to do with my super flat feet lol.
Hey there Wendy, congrats on making the decision to get back in shape. Taking those before pics is great motivation to get into your workouts and keep the diet in check. Good luck with making those goals.
