Overall Goal: just bought a heavy bag and gloves to add something new to my routines. any suggestions? i'm running the holiday gauntlet for the elusive 6 pack. my birthday is at the end of the month, so i have a personal goal.
I decided that when I turning 40 wasn't the end, but a beginning. I want to be happy/proud of who I am and an inspiration to my three young sons.
Why I Love It:
i love the pump, the adrenaline rush, and the results
How I Stay Motivated:
I try to keep my goals in mind. Guys who are also in their 40's but work hard and defy age, gravity, social norms and anything negative that comes their way to transform themselves into lean mean machines are an inspiration.
BB Accomplishments:
losing 80 lbs--guess that's more of a personal accomplishment
Forum Signature:
work hard, play hard & make 'em laugh.
life's too short for anything less.

Goal (Long):
I want to transform my body, build muscle, reduce fat to single digits and maitain a healthy lifestyle. It was only 4 years ago that I tipped the scales at 273 pounds. Not earth shattering, but when it's only fat, not something inspiring or self defining. I looked at my 3 young sons and decided I wanted to be around to see all of the great milestones in their lives. I also wanted to balance being a moral role model with being a healthy role model. I decided I wasn't chained to 40" waist pants and XXL shirts and set off on a weight loss and muscle building program. I haven't reached my ultimate goal, but I've lost 76 pounds (weigh just less than 200 now) and eat healthy and exercise regularly. I've got a ways to go, but the light at the end of the tunnel burns pretty bright
Jeff's discipline is exemplified in his running and weight triaining. he's recently placed in his first competition at the age of 41 proving that what defines you is your attitude and your determination. plus he's never too preoccupied to offer a constructive tip or word of encouragement. the man's a motivator.
What do you think about people who "grunt" loudly while working out? Do you do it?
i didn't think I did until 1 day there was a pause in my WO tunes and I heard myself grunt. LOL.luckily i WO alone inmy basement

Do you tell your friends and/or family about your fitness goals?
No
Why or why not?
don't really have anyone in my family or circle who's interested in the topic, other than my sons. they more than make up for everyone else's ambivalence with their enthusiasm and admiration. but i know a big part of it is unconditional love, but that's ok, too. The lack of interest is really why I look to bodyspace --it's a great community with the same mind set and people who will provide the validation and motivation to keep you working hard. it can get a little disheartnening when you you don't even get credit for what you feel are pretty hard earned gains, so a simple "great progress, bro!" goes a long way. our minds and bodies are needy in similar ways. don't really have anyone in my family or circle who's interested in the topic, other than my sons. they more than make up for everyone else's ambivalence with their enthusiasm and admiration. but i kn...more

What tips would you give to others to help them stay motivated over the long-term?
chart your progress. giving yourself credit for the little gains keeps you motivated. plus having a big picture goal helps. don't be shy about dreaming big.
Top 4 Chest Building Exercises. Don’t do things like Bench Pressing to your neck or with your elbows out. Both are potentially dangerous and will injure your shoulders. Use exercises where you can go heavy safely.

Happy New Year!
Thanks for your comments! On your goal - I have previously integrated a heavy bag into my workout split. I had several routines based on my overall phase goal. In a high strength, bulk phase - I used it to warm up my upper body more completely before a chest/ back routine. On cut phases - high rep shoulder cuts sets as well as pre-exhaust, and cardio. Lots of cautions here if you are new to the bag though. wrist and carpal, metacarpal injury, overtraining, etc.
thanks bro. yeah im not much on cardio I play basketball and that is about the extent of my cardio that and jump rope and I hit on the heavy bag pretty often. thanks for the compliments man. you seem to be doing great man keep it up!

Thanks for the kind comment bro. I already started working out a week ago light weights and hope to fuly recover soon and get even better .. U too looking really good .. How is your training going?
Understood. Yeah, I'm turning 39 in April. I've look good for my last year of "youth". You've see HermTheWorm's profile, I take it? If I can look like that at 48 I'll be alright.
Oh, cardio. I got running, snow skiing and swimming on the odd weekend. I lean up by doing HIT training during the weights. It actually keeps my cardio strength up too!
Cheers!

Thanks for the feedback. My arms have been as large as 17 3/4", but I was having to target arms only, and it was not practical to maintain. The best moves for raw girth and width are heavy standing barbell cheater curls, and heavy dumbbell hammer curls. Hope this helps. As for the heavy bag, I would advise to tape your wrists, if you are going to go all out. It's easy to fold a wrist over, when you've got a lot behind your punch.
My biceps are decent for my body size, but I am not at 17" yet. Only a little over 16". It is pretty dissapointing. But that is a pretty lean 16+ inches. Hopefully some day I can get there. It seems like as you get older, you just put on more and more size, so hopefully that works out for me too haha. I am only 20 and have been lifting solidly for a year and a half, so I think I still have some gains to make. If you stay at it and work hard, you will get those 17" arms.
Just YMCA 6-15. Light heavyweight till i was 18.Slugger not really a boxer.Judo and no wrestling. Was decent 82-35 record. No pro fights.EMS toughman stuff.Too old now.Just fun.The knuckles get busted than heal.Gets hard and calcification occurs.I use cissus orally. And ben-gay in sauna post bag workout.Karate is next venture. In process of moving.
Holidays! Ya all things considered diet has been pretty clean. About another 6 weeks until diet time for show mode. Keep up the hard work! What an Inspiration!
Yeah, I'm not to big on legs either. But I have started working them weekly. I actually found that within a few weeks of adding them in regularly they weren't quite so much torture! Something for you to look forward to...
