How I Started: I would do light toning exercises in the gym. Several people told me I should try to compete for figure, and I finally gave in. I started learning to really lift this past January.
Why I Love It: It's a fresh, new challenge, unlike anything I've tried before. I love learning the technique as well as the TRUTH--that lifting won't suddenly turn me into a guy.

Main Goal: Compete
Goal (Short): I want to gain muscle, enter a figure competition and still finish my dissertation!
Goal (Long): Last year I feel in love with distance running and ran my first marathon. This year I am concentrating on strength training. I want to gain a few pounds of lean muscle before I start competing in figure competitions. In my ideal future I want to finish my PhD, become certified as a personal trainer, and then be complete in both body and mind. (-:

Workout Program:
I do 5 weeks of high weight/8 reps then 3 weeks of lighter weight/12 reps. I vary with pyramids, dropsets, supersets, and muscle groupings. It changes WEEKLY. I currently do very little cardio (4 miles per week) since I am trying to gain weight.

I guess the rest days are important. Sometimes it feels good to go 6 days straight. Other times after the 3rd day I'm ready for a break. The kind where you get home and just fall asleep right away.
