Simply by starting young and absorbing as much information as I possibly can. My strict diet is what has really helped me surpass all of my friends who lift. Other than that, I just like to hurt myself in the gym :)

haha, Its all about where you came from. I was eating 1 to 2 meals a day, smoking 2 packets of cigrettes and never drank water. Now im eating like a horse and working out heavy 3 times a week. heres my journal, http://forum.bodybuilding.com/ showthread.php?t=113391151
Quality over quantity, i only do weights 3 per week. Eat right, rest good, and go as hard as you can in the gym. Always keep a postitive mind frame.

as long as youre gaining weight and lifting heavy in the gym, some of it will be muscle. Only a fraction, as a lot of it will be fat. Burn the fat later, when youre happy with the weight
