I first started going to the gym in my mid-teens. I quickly gained a whole lot of muscle, topping off at around 200lbs at the age of 16. After HS, I did very little weight training until I got into running in 2002. Since then I have used weight training to increase muscle endurance and help prevent injury.

At this point I was going to the gym 1-3x/week, and not really following a set program.
Build muscle strength and endurance to stay injury free while training and racing ultramarathons.
Goal (Long):
I started running seriously in 2002. Since that time, I worked my way up from half-marathons, to marathons, all the way to 50K, 100K, and 160K ultramarathons. Although I have never been seriously injured from running, I recognize that to achieve my goals of running multiple 100 mile races in a single year, I have to be proactive. Ths includes more and better miles in training, as well as a program of total body strength training. Recovery between workouts is also a key component of my training; a vegan whole foods diet has helped me to recover faster and have much more energy.
I just read your article on vegetarian diets and bodybuilding. This is my first official week meat free and I am feeling more confident about what I am doing after reading that.
Thanks.
Great physique, especially for a long distance runner. I'm an aspiring marathoner, but currently hobbled by Achilles tendonitis. I wish I'd started serious strength training earlier and run smarter to avoid it. Right now I'm just trying to get back into running, hopefully run some 10Ks next year. Good luck!
How long did it take you to build up to doing ultramarathons? What do you think is most important to remaining injury free? How does weight training fit into your over all workout program? Do you take any recovery supplements?
Never tried an ultramarathon, that's some dedication! Have done reg marathons tho, Boston twice...now not much cardio at all, just lifting. Good luck with your goals.
You should start a bodyblog and tell us about your training and races. Might be one of those things that you don't want to talk about afterward but I think it'd be so fascinating to so many people, including me.
You are proof that enven runners can benefit from a good gym routine. You are making great progress and I look forward to seeing how it helps you in your ultra marathons.
Keep pushing that envelope.
Wow - I love running (not at the level your at yet, but theres nothing like it) but I also love the results of lifting and the muscle gains - But it seems like it's counterproductive, when I lift hard it slows me down. Have you noticed this?
Running is the best isn't it? Outdoor running is the only way to fly. I get so bored on that treadmill haha. You do HIIT often or do you do more distance?
