For the most part. Sometimes they interview just to make a list for the next 12 months so that if there is an opening they can go to that list and find someone. Other times you might get 2 or 3 calls for interviews from places because they just interview for the openings that they have. But if you are willing to put in the work it WILL pay off in the end. Trust me over 5 years trying and over 15 different depts. but now I can say that I am a firefighter. It Is worth the wait and work.

If there is a CPAT test that you can take in your state do it... then they will send your app.and everything to the depts. that you want that take CPAT and all you have to do then is go for an interview. It does take a little money to take the test ( $100.00 here in Kansas) but that is good for a year for the physical and 2 years on the written. I think that when I did it I had 6 to 8 depts. call me for interviews.

You could get certified first and then worry about your associate's, but I'd check with the department you are trying to get on to see what the new hires have. It is very competitive and you have to meet or exceed what everyone else has. Good luck. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!

It took me two years, but I got my associate's degree in fire science along with my EMT. The EMT course was an entire semester and 11 credit hours!

I love being a firefighter and EMT. I work for a town of about 50,000 people that also runs the ambulance service out of the fire department, so I get to use my EMT skills a lot more than my fire skills. It's all good, though. Whenever a real fire call comes in, it makes picking Granny up off of the floor all worth it.

I did pass the stress test, thank goodness. Two other guys that were supposed to start with me on the FD didn't. It is really easy to fail, apparently. I love being a firefighter/EMT. I wouldn't trade it for the world. It took me 5 years to get onto the department and I still can't believe that it is real. Good luck with school.
