Overall Goal: I am trying to get back to the gym on a regular bases without exhausting myself. I've come to realize that when a person has a chronic disease your body may not allow you to do certain things.

When I Started:
Jan, 2007
How I Started:
After 2 years of misdiagnosis, in 2004 doctors finally diagnosed me with Lupus and Fibromyalgia. I had been told I had everything from the flu to Lupus to it was all in my head and that I was making it up. It was an enormous blow as I had always been active and here I was barely able to get out of bed, extremely painful joints and muscles, migraine type headaches and severe exhaustion, sleeping for 12 hours at night and at least 5 to 6 hours during the day and never feeling rested. Then add into the mix, my husband after numerous surgeries found that he had a life threatening infection in his leg and had to have his left leg amputated above the knee. I became even more sedentary, depressed and so my comfort was to indulge in food.
In the fall of 2006 my doctor (best his heart) suggested that exercise would help but let’s face it; going to the gym was the furthest thing from my mind. So in October of 2006 I got a membership at the local gym but of course didn’t even set foot into it until the end January of ’07. I was tired of feeling exhausted and sluggish and especially tired looking at my ever-expanding muffin top and decided that I was going to try the Body for Life program. I told my husband he could join me if he wanted but no matter what I was determined to go and do something. Luckily, after much discussion he said that he would try it also.
The first few weeks of the Body for Life Challenge were definitely a “challenge”. Just getting up and going to the gym to work out was overwhelming; walking up a set of stairs produced so much pain (think of the feeling of lactic acid build-up) that I would have to stop half way until the pain subsided. Following a work out was a mandatory nap that could last up to 3 hours, and now naps have gotten to be only 2 hours (it’s amazing what an hour can hold). In fact the mental and physical process of getting to the gym is a strain each and every day. But the feeling of satisfaction, accomplishment and boost to my spirit during and after a workout session has been worth every bit of the struggle.
Why I Love It:
No matter how good or bad I feel going into the gym, after an hour of training I leave knowing that I gave my best and feel fantastic for it. I have never once said , “I wish I hadn’t trained today.”
How I Stay Motivated:
Having a workout partner that exemplifies the meaning of “giving all you got”. The Captain makes me push a little hard and a little longer than I think I am able.
BB Accomplishments:
January 2008 -Though not "bodybuilding" per say on the cover of a local magazine with Captain Ahab, in which his story was published.
Completed the Body For Life Challenge in 2007 and in 3 months shaped a body that I can be proud of.

Goal (Long):
For my 50th birtday in April '10 I want to be in the best shape of my life. I want to learn not to place the emphasis on a number on the scale but on how I feel.
Last night as I got ready for bed I took my usual medication for my lupus headaches, I hoped that I would a) be able to go to sleep and b) that the headache would go away. Well 3 hours later I was up taking another dose of headache medication. Normally this would knock me out but a few...
JudiMax, great transformation. Sounds like you've been thru the mill, but you're still positive & moving forward. Great work.
Best of luck to you and your family.
Thanks so much! I found a soy one tonite am going to try out it has 25g of protein in 1 scoopful! Once I have a few minutes I'll post some pics up of before n after shots! I will look into that one you recommended. Do you do a wheat free diet? I find it has helped me trememdously!
Hi! Just joined bbldg.com I also have the same diseases you have (lupus and fibro) diagnosed a yr and half ago. I am currently training for my first fitness competition what protein shakes are you on? I am on a wheat free diet (the gluten aggravates my condition) how are you managing?
I saw your husbands profile and story yesterday and I just wanted to congragulate you and him... you look wonderful and so does he... I admire the love you both have for eachother and the love and faith you both have in God... I know all that was how you both realize your dreams.. :)
Thanks Judimax. Sure, I'd love to talk more. contact me anytime. It's really hard to battle the part of self that says "you should be doing..." isn't it? I'm a bit behind with the blog but I fit in all the wkouts this week. today was leg day for me and I was just about in tears by the end. Have you found anything that helps a bit? How are things on your end this week?
You and your husband have made such amazing transformations! Good job on the great work! Your husband left me an inspiring comment a year ago and I am just getting back to him about it cause I lost my focus then but now I'm ready to go beyond my limits and be pushed out of my comfort zone! My husband is a great help and motivator! You look great!
Thanks Judimax...yup bikes are my life. Why dont you guys try ATV's. I have a friend named Bo who lost his leg in a motorcycle accident when he was 20 and is now just on the atv. He realized what a gift it was and is now being safe but having a good time. You guys have made incredible headway though. Ive actually told a few friends about the captain. It sad how people end up setting their own limitations - like life isnt hard enough as it is
thanks for accepting my add request...i too have fibro. and there for a while was told it was all in my head but i knew it wasn't and persisted on finding answers...good luck with everything
