Mom was a leotard spa princess (she wore the same burgundy one with burgundy tights every day). During the summer, my mom would take me to the gym, and I'd watch her thru the nursery window... EVERY DAY for 2 hours ! ! !
Dad was a runner and he used to take me on his jogs. Eventually, I joined my junior high track team and was officially Miss 3rd place at every track meet ! ! Our training was nothing more than a mile run every other day
I had already been lifting weights since my freshman year of highchschool. In the early 90's I was a big fan of The American Gladiators & the Fitness America pageants on TV. I alwasy dreamed of doing the same thing, but I wasn't able to due to my obligation to the armed forces, and lack of a strong gymnastics background. I got my chance in 2005, when I learned of a new age of fitness competitions that did not require such acrobatic routines or excessive muscular development. One day, after being referred to as "scrawny" by an IFBB pro, I stumbled acros the Ms. Bikini America website, and decided to enter. My boss at The Sports Club Irvine, gave me some very limited competition dieting advice. He let me do the thinking and he just kinda guided me til I had it figured out. Having to put in all that effort to figure it out on my own, allowed my knowledge to become permanently instilled upon my lifestyle.
Now... I get antsy if I go a few months without competing
Why I Love It:
To make a long story short; I'm a reborn
pessimist, recoverd cocaine addict and a suicide survivor
I went through a depression starting in summer 01 with the breakup of my long term boyfreind followed by losing my business & 9-11, then the death of my grandfather. And ending with an attempted suicide caused by mixing prescription medication and alcohol in February 06. A few weeks later, I was in my first and only domestic altercation that left me with a broken nose and broken ankle. But despite the handicap, I managed to pull thru an intense 5 week training program (which did not include any cardio or exercises on my feet) that helped me with my first show; the 2006 FAME Golden State Fitness Model. It was my 3rd competition (My first 2 were in the Fitness Universe system).
How I Stay Motivated:
The very fact that I survived my suicide attempt is the #1 reason why I stay motivated. I thank God every day for my 2nd chance, and I strive to not take anything for granted anymore. My health and my sweetheart Geoff, are my other main sources of motivation. Geoff has become an integral part of my life. He keeps me in check when I get lazy, makes me feel guilty when I indulge a bit too often. And since he is also a trainer, he shows me new exercises & programs that differ greatly from my own style.
I also enjoy reading fitness & exercise publications (this is actually a genetically inherited addiction), and reminding myself that I don't want to ever become a typical american woman and "let myself go". Not to mention, I have a beautiful bodybuilder boyfriend to keep up with... I can't let him be prettier than me ;) I love you Geoff !
