A guy I work with has been powerlifting for 26 yrs. Back in August '03, he had just finished a meet and came in with a picture of himself squatting 700lbs at 196lb bodyweight. I was blown away by this and wanted to start, so I asked him to train me.
Why I Love It:
Powerlifting is challenging.. physically, but more so mentally and emotionally. I compete for me. I don't care what the next guy is doing or what his numbers are. It's something that keeps me going to improve myself.
How I Stay Motivated:
I just have this mentality to keep at it. It's become a part of me. I want to do this, I want to get bigger numbers. I compete in the AAPF (drug-tested) and APA (drug-tested) federations. Some of these meets combine the non-drug tested and drug tested competitors together. It feels great knowing that when you are competing against a drug-enhanced athlete and your numbers end up better or comparable to theirs
BB Accomplishments:
My best lifts in competition:
AAPF Nationals - 429.9lbs (195kg) Bench @163lb bodyweight 4/15/07
AAPF Nationals - 556.66lb (252.5kg) Deadlift @163lb bodyweight 4/15/07
AAPF Nationals - 628.31lb (285kg) Squat @164.25lb bodyweight 4/12/08
APA Bench Record in CT in 165lb class - 410lbs

2nd week of training after my meet, and i'm feeling pretty good. I've been doing a lot of kettlebell work.. ie, snatches, swings, and clean and press, with a 45lb and 55lb kettlebell. I think this has greatly helped my conventional deadlift, and I'll explain why shortly. My...

I am actually really enjoying my training now. Today I did drop sets to failure on my shoulders & biceps. I can still feel the burn hours later! Amazing! How 'bout you?
