When I Started:
Oct, 2006
How I Started:
i started weight training when I was 27 years old. I was dating a bodybuilder at the time and he encouraged me to start. I'm so glad he did. I have gone off and on throughout the years, raising 2 kids, a career, etc. But I never left it for long as the gym was my escape and it always gave me that sense of control, when sometimes life just seemed to get out of control. In 2006 I began to get more serious though. I was in my late 50s, still in good shape, but had lost that muscle mass. So, I got a trainer and started. Then, after taking the Christmas holidays off, my trainer said he couldn't accommodate my schedule, so he referred me to another trainer. Since I wasn't thrilled with my current trainer, I didn't resist. I got great results from this new trainer.... so good as a matter of fact so good that we have been a couple every since. (hey, if you can't afford a trainer, become his girlfriend! haha JK honey) He was a competitor a few years earlier, but had an injury and was forced to leave competition. Nonetheless, he's been a great asset to my BBing education & a huge support. In late 2007 I had some terrible business setbacks that put me into an emotional tailspin. I was struggling to save my business & economic situation and as a result pretty much stopped training. We'd fit in sessions when we could, but on a very irregular basis. Then on Jan 1, 2009 I realized that my economic situation wasn't going away, but my health was so I got back into the gym in a serious way. I was really making progress when 6 weeks later I caught a serious flu and was out for over a month. After that came vertabrae damage. Months later........ good news.... I just received my Chiropractors blessings to begin lifting again. I've only been back for 1 week and 2 days and I am SO happy. I'm already seeing a change (muscle memory is so wonderful). I've lost 7 lbs of water and fat, am increasing my weights and just feel great. Sore, but great. I'm taking it slow and really supporting my immune system so no new bugs will get me!
Why I Love It:
So many reason. As I said earlier, it gives me a sense of control in an out-of-control world. It gives me a sense of accomplishment in a way nothing else can. And, I've never been one to follow the norm. I like having big strong muscles and still be feminine.
How I Stay Motivated:
After being forced off weights for several months and gaining weight and feeling like a slug...... it's simple to stay motivated. I think after all the years I've weight trained I am finally going to compete. There aren't that many 'over 50' women, but enough to set a great example, which is what I want to do. Women have to realize that they only get saggy and weak if they allow it!

To be in competition shape... maybe even to compete this time around????
Goal (Long):
I have weight trained since I was 27. I am 59. Although I keep muscle and am in good shape for my age..... heck I'm in good shape for most any age.... I want to exceed my old expectations and take it to the next level. Maybe even find enough courage to enter a competition or two. I'm ready!! Life is to short to live it halfway!

Judie, thanks for the good words; and congrats to you also...what a great and inspiring story YOU have; I use 24 Hour gyms as well here in Seattle area. Too bad we cant train together. Likewise motivation is a snap for me too when I consider the alternatives!
Hi jkc123,
Injury is a bummer, however I did it to myself. When you take anger out on the weights the weights win. My choice is to limit myself to light workouts forever or have surgery and, after a year, push it to the max again. I think I'll go for the latter.
I appreciate your concern. You would be a great training partner.
Cheers,
Dennis
Hi Judie,
You're looking great. Best wishes with the competition.
I have a supraspinatus tendon and labrum tear in my shoulder which has kept me away form the gym for a while. I may need surgery. I still do aerobics five times a week.
Cheers,
Dennis
I've always been very hard on myself! I'm trying to learn to stop doing that! :) Hey Judie! I also hope you've been having a Great weekend so far !!! :)
Thank you so much for the add Judie !!! :) I'm just trying to stay motivated and stay on track at the Gym !!! :) How is your training coming along Judie?
Yes, we baby boomers have done some remarkable things but for some of us, we did not stay with the basics of life. I lift weights every other day, walk on the off days, and recently started taking Taekwondo classes with my five year old granddaughter (I am the oldest student). I have surprised some of the older boys by keeping up with them in class and maybe even myself!! Good luck in competition and you're already a winner just in the doing. Take care, KEN
Of course you can join this group, its open to people whom have decided to make a change in thier lives. Keep up the good work and stay safe. John "Tin Man" Menchaca
