My Workout Philosophy View My Full Workout Program

The big three: Lifting heavy. Adequate nutrients. Adequate rest.

Lifting heavy, getting enough to eat and getting enough rest is a probably to general a summary for my workout philosophy. There hundreds of things that go into a succesfull workout plan; intensity, form, types of exercises, amount of sets, focus, proper engagement of the muscle, pushing until failure, pushing your absolute hardest, commiting, not skipping the gym or your diet, rest time between sets and so on. I guess more importantly is how I view working out in general.

Wierd as it sounds I imagine the process like water flowing throw a pipe. There are a bunch of leaks in the pipe and you've got to find where they are and plug them. The leaks are invisible and you can only tell if you've plugged one by how much water flows out the end of the pipe and the pipe is miles long so it takes weeks for you to take another reading. Some leaks are bigger than others. If you plug one and others are still leaking you wont get results. If you let go of one to plug another it still leaks and you wont get results. If you plug the big one but little ones are leaking, no results. If you plug the little ones but there is still a big one, no results. There is always another leak somewhere waiting to be found.

This analogy removes alot of mental blocks for me. Something either works, or it doesn't. I don't really care why it works as long as it doesn't interfere with my goals of getting bigger and maintaining optimal health. I also like to keep in mind that taking care of your body is the most important thing you can do because then you can do anything, go anywhere, risk everything in your life and no matter what your body will still be there standing strong to carry your mind through the next challenge.

My Nutrition Program View My Full Nutrition Program

I follow the paleo diet. No dairy. No grains. No Legumes.

I follow a diet that tries to model the diet of pre-agricultural revolution hunter gatherer humans. It limits you to foods that our ancestors evolved to be able to eat. I thought the diet was bullshit until I tried it. I always have energy and never crash. I get enough protein for my workouts easily and recover faster.

My nutrient ratio is about

-10% carbs

-55% fat

-35% protein

My diet consists primarily of meat, vegetables and nuts with fruit in moderation.

I do not eat grains. That means:

-no bread

-no cereal

-no pasta

I rarely eat dairy and if I do it's dense and fermented

-No milk

-No yogurt

-No cream

I do not eat legumes

-No beans

-No peas

-No peanuts

My Motivation Program View My Full Motivation Program

I'm mostly utilitarian when it comes to working out. My goals are specific, visceral and personal and I greatly value their payoff.

I've never resonated well with those pictures that have quotes on them that say things like "work hard", "believe in yourself", "you can achieve anything if you believe", "no pain no gain" blah blah blah. I don't really care about that stuff. The truth is, there aren't too many things that justify the work it takes to get a ripped body. However the few things that do, are huge. I have a very specific, imagined period of a whole month, constructed in my mind that contains a few experiences that really get me fucking going.

To get motivated, I listen to the version of me who lives that day. I can't cheat my future self. He's always there in my ear asking me why I didn't help him out a bit more. I don't think I'm giving anything away when I say that this imagined month includes traveling, girls and a sick car car. I know exactly how getting ripped fits into my vision. It also includes feeling great, being perfectly healthy, loud music, playing my piano, dancing like a fool, eating at awesome restaurants and some things I can't go into detail about on here. No one can tell me that my goals are wrong or that I should be more like someone else. I don't really care about competition. I don't really care about "challenging myself". I don't really care about "pushing myself to the limit". I know what I truly want, what I truly value and don't get distracted by why other people are doing.

The energy that launches me down the path towards this vision comes from my diet, my sleep, my ability to constrain myself to act upon this vision most of the day and of course imagining the vision itself.
