Overall Goal: Improve strength all over and particularly in the upper body to delay the progression of COPD and to improve my overall fitness and health.

When I Started:
Sep, 2007
How I Started:
I started with a Total Gym and progressed to free weights in October of 2008
Why I Love It:
I have COPD which limits my endurance in CV workouts. I incorporate deep breathing exercise with freeweight workouts and I look and feel much better and my breathing scores have improved.
How I Stay Motivated:
I stay motivated by doing. I haven't been this healthy in years. I have more energy and stamina, not to mention it is easier to do things when you are stronger.
Improve strength all over and particularly in the upper body to delay the progression of COPD and to improve my overall fitness and health.
Goal (Long):
I have a sedentary job and have developed COPD, high cholesterol, cervical arthritis, sleep apnea and poor posture. I have been lifting weights since summer of 2008 and hope to continue to improve my stength and mobility. At 57 years of age I hope to improve my activity level and remain active into old age. In the process I hope to continue to improve my physique and appearence.
Why? What are the pros and cons of working out there?
I am at work 9-1/2 hours and commute for 1-1/2 hour total. I wouldn't do it if I had to make it to a Gym too.

What should look for in a gym? What should you avoid?
Since mine is a home gym I try to keep it simple. Free weights, Combo rack, Bench w/ leg and PC attachments, straight and articulating benches, and lat/row 3 pulley atttachment to basement beam and post (home made in process). Lat bar and still use the Total Gym Pro for pullovers, sqauts and twists.Since mine is a home gym I try to keep it simple. So, I've really gotten into working out and really look forward to it and feel I've missed something on in between days. I don't know that I look any different, but I feel different and I can tell that my weight, though about the same, is transferring from fat to muscle. I feel great, but...
Thank you Dave, looks like you are also on a great path. I think the improved health and well being is the greatest part of the whole thing. Keep up the great work and stay motivated.
my Mom has COPD, so I know what it takes out of a person. You have my admiration for what you are working for AND achieving! You're kicking ass ... don't let anything or anyone hold you back :)
Ive got some good home workouts developed that i put together for some CEO's that in know in BP and they are over the moon with them. Let me know if your interested.

Thanks for the note. Things are going so far so good. The last almost 3 weeks I have been sick, but I'm just about over it, I don't need ibuprofen to cover the pain from swollen tonsils! I'm about 1/4 to my fat loss goal, but I expect that the next 1/4 will take 2x as long.
awesome transformation so far.
have fun in here. it is a great site for help and motivation.
thanks for stoppin by my site. we 55+ guys have to stick together.
