When I Started:
Apr, 2007
How I Started:
After my fiance had survived a heart attack at age 40, I knew I had to make some changes so as not to follow in his footsteps. My cholesterol was already elevated, and I tipped the scale at 182 pounds (size 16/18).
I began walking as a means of getting healthy. Much to my surprise, I started to lose weight (20 pounds to be exact). It was just what I needed to motivate me.
I had wanted to try running, so a friend of mine found a beginner's running program off the internet that combined running and walking until one's able to run 5K. I honestly never thought I'd ever be able to run such a distance, but after only 2 months, I was doing it.
I then plateaued and wasn't losing anymore weight regardless of how much I ran. This went on for a few months until I talked to another friend of mine who was into bodybuilding. She educated me and got me started on a lifting program. At this point, my diet had already improved once having seen a dietitian for my high cholesterol (By the way, my cholesterol is now back to normal through diet and exercise alone).
Since I've been lifting, I've gotten past the plateau and have lost another 31 pounds (51 pounds in total). I'm now 131 pounds and getting much closer to my goal. Healthy living is now what I am all about. I will never be that fat girl again!
Why I Love It:
Throughout my youth, I was always an athletic person. Somehow, I lost who I was along the way. Bodybuilding has brought me back. I feel so much stronger, healthier and a whole lot happier.
How I Stay Motivated:
Motivation is in each and every day. For me, it could be the pound I just lost; the new song I just added to my MP3 or the jeans that just became too big for me.
