High school football. I wasn't very big so my Dad bought a Sears weight set, a tub of mass gainer and had me drinking orange juice with a couple of raw eggs in it (Rocky style) to put on weight and build strength.
When I went to college I didn't have a choice. I was going to have to train with weights a hell of a lot more if I was going to compete with the athletes at that level.
I joined the Navy more than 20 years ago and fitness is a big part of my job. The workouts however have been more calisthenic and cardio (run/swim) oriented for most of that time.
Fairly recently I made the switch to more of a functional strength workout program. My wife has also incorporated a cleaner, healthier diet into our programs, and it has made a difference! More energy, faster recovery and healthier than ever.
Why I Love It:
Truth be told, if I could eat ice cream while sitting on the couch and still get the same results...
However, I love being able to operate and train at a high level and this is the way to maintain that edge.
How I Stay Motivated:
My wife (Xercisegrl)!
Beyond that, the drive to excel has to come from within. The only way to continually improve is by challenging yourself physically and mentally every day.

There are two types of pain in life. The pain of discipline and the pain of regret. Which will you choose?
Goal (Long):
To maximize my cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power,
coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy (see the general physical skills in my workout program section for a more detailed explanation).
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "Holy ****! What a ride!"
Xercisegrl is my wife. She is the biggest inspiration in my life. She is, at the same time, a loving wife and mother, intense, knowledgeable and I can't stop looking at her without a sense of awe! She has one of the toughest workout routines I have seen and maintains a positive attitude despite medical setbacks. She embodies what this lifestyle is all about and she does it with class and style. There is no one better.
Are you Phuckin' kidding me? This lady has made tremendous progress. The testing she does every three months or so isn't just a physical measuring stick but a real gut check. It's mentally demanding and you would be hard pressed to find anyone, man or woman who can compete with her in both arenas. The fact that she not only completes them but, continues to improve by leaps and bounds says her daily routine is just as demanding.
A common observation by people who spend time on military bases is the apparent lack of an effective strength and conditioning program for the majority of our Soldiers, Sailors, Marines or Airmen. Meals are typically served up in the mess hall or galley in the same manner and with the same...
Just for the record, I didn't let the subject of protein slip through the cracks. I want to give you my two cents on various protein powders (Et Al) complete with links. :) The discipline/regret line is great. So simple. I think life is simple but the nuttiness makes it complicated. A shrink once told me that. I totally agree, though.
Man, you f-cking hit it out of the park with that e-mail link. Grass fed nitrate-free corn beef? Holy smokes. Nitrate free grass fed bologna? I'm a HUGE BBQ fiend (Barbecuing is NOT grilling) and I've always wanted to try smoked/grilled bologna on fresh baked white bread (cheat day) but the nitrates (Ain't gonna eat'em) prevented me from pulling it off. Thanks a bunch. I really appreciate it. :)
So I'm assuming you give them a definite thumbs up. I just tried incorporating them into my diet this week, so the jury is still out here, but from what I've read they are an amazing foodstuff.
No contest planned. Not sure what my next move will be. You should plan your Azores trip between June - Aug b/c thats when the bullfights & festivals are going on & plus the weather is nice. I love Europe & can't wait to get back to mainlain Europe so I can travel more.

Ain't that the truth about the weight. I laughed at the cyclops-ish commment. The screen on my camera isn't working, so I had to look through that little tiny peephole, LOL.
Personally, I'm doing fine. But my kids are dropping like flies. I picked up my youngest son yesterday from school with a fever, and I just picked up my daughter who has a fever now too. My oldest son just got over the same thing and went back to school on Monday. The two at home are either sleeping or mellowed out in front of the TV here in the room with me.
Well they make it sound like it's about the entire youth population of the U.S., but how many of those young people apply to join? It's a very small percentage of the entire population. So whatever percentage of those who join who are ineligible, how many would that turn out to be? A million, ten thousand, one thousand? That's why I'm saying the number is skewed.
Thanks Dave, my time wasn't as fast as I would have liked. I kept good form throughout but lost the most time on the cleans (my legs were not happy with them haha)
