When I Started:
Feb, 2007
How I Started:
I've worked out off-and-on throughout my life. I was mostly a skinny kid growing up... With the exception of my "potato" biceps and high traps. When I got into my 30s, my metabolism slowed and I began to enjoy food a little too much. At 32, I joined the Body for Life program and really turned things around (for the 12 weeks I was on it). I committed to the program and trained very hard. It worked out great... I won 3rd place in my age group for the gym I was participating with. Unfortunately, it was not a lifestyle I could maintain. So, I reverted back to my old ways. Then, when I was about 34, I got a new job and developed some poor eating habits. During that time, I spent a lot of time at McDonalds and other fast food stops. As you can imagine, I gained more fat than I'd ever had. Not that I was obese... my genes would require some extreme eating for that to happen. But I did develop quite a gut and love handles... not to mention a good layer of fat all over my body. Well, this February I decided I'd had enough of that. I bought a Bowflex and started a new routine on my own. It was modeled somewhat after the Body for Life program, which is really just portion control of healthy food and a regular excercise program. But I decided to pace myself so that I could establish a lifestyle I could stick to. Now I run every weekday morning for about 15-20 minutes and work out every weekday after work. I know it's not the ideal routine, but it works for me. And, I've made some great progress. Now it's July and I'm not yet back to the shape I was in after my Body For Life deal 3 years ago. But I feel great and am still motivated to stick with this one for life.
Why I Love It:
Well who doesn't love to look great? Of course it's not all about the looks. I'm not necessarily a young man anymore, so I have to think about my health. But I love it because of the way it makes me feel and the how I look after a hard workout. There's just nothing like a good pump!
How I Stay Motivated:
I look in the mirror during and after my workouts. When you can see the progress you've made and remember how hard it was to get where you are, it motivates you to stick with it. It's as if you begin to treasure what you have and want to protect from what it was before.
BB Accomplishments:
Body-For-Life - 3rd Place Men's Age 30-40 yrs old (12 weeks to total body transition at age 32)
Lifestyle change - Age 35 - Total body transition in 12-16 weeks and still going!
That's right folks... I increased my run from a mile to two miles a day today. I never would've expected it. If you haven't gathered from previous posts, I HATE cardio. I know I have to do it, but honestly, I don't think I'll ever really enjoy it. Then again, I never thought I'd be...
Great work! I'm sure you get asked this too much, but "how did you make that amazing avatar picture?" I mean, amazing not only in the sense of the physical change, but how do you get it to do that morphing animation! That is SO cool!
Hey Mike, I finally stepped up the workout routine from 3 days to 6 days. I am not doing much cardio because I want to gain muscle mass. Do you think cardio is a really important factor in getting definition?
Hey Mike: This is an incredible transformation, buddy. You look terrific. I am also impressed by your profile write up. I agree, as we get older, it is so important to maintain good development--keep up the great work. By the way, how did you create the cool morphing effect of your pics?
