Background

When I Started: Nov 2011
HOW I STARTED:

I've worked out in various ways since my early 20s and used to do martial arts as a teenager. My 2IC inspired me to take my weight lifting and nutrition more seriously. Now I'm kicking ass and taking names in the base gym on my first overseas deployment, loving every minute of it.

WHY I LOVE IT:

Endorphins and feeling great are at the top of my list, followed closely by the sexy woman I get to see in the mirror. I'm also enjoying the prospect of living a long, strong, healthy life with my wonderful man.

Things are going well here on the unnamed tropical island of semi-boredom (better than being an island of DOOM I suppose, but still...) Gym here is good, even though there's only one squat rack and one bench rack. Thankfully I don't have to share it with many others, as so few of the guys use it... Current stats for StrongLifts 5x5: Squat - 72.5kg (nailed it Friday, up to 75 tomorrow hopefully) Bench - 45kg Barbell Row - 42.5kg Overhead Press - 27.5kg (had to deload as I got stuck on 32.5)... Quick sunburnt update

Making do with what you've got

Out bush, you'd think there'd be plenty of things to help you work out. Fact is, though, that weight plates were invented because heavier things tend to be too large to lift without hurting yourself after a while. I was a bit worried before starting this three week field exercise, as to what I was going to do about normal exercise. I figured running wouldn't be a problem, the ground is everywhere you go. Lifting, however, is another issue, especially as I'm up to over 30kg on all lifts, and 60kg for deadlifts. What could I use? Thankfully for me, a few of the guys on this ex also take their re...

So apart from my SL5x5 workouts starting to get real challenging now, some other stuff has been on my mind that I wanted to blog about. I'm up to my ninth session of 5x5, so obviously I've been noticing good changes - my legs are firmer, my butt is bigger (trust me, that's a good thing), and I deadlifted 55kg yesterday so I'm halfway to my biggest goal. What I've been feeling, though, is that maybe I'm spending too much time looking in the mirror. This whole journey is supposed to be about strength, according to my own thoughts about it. Surely that means vanity can take a backseat, at least u...
