At the age of fourteen I watched my mother compete in her 1st bodybuilding
show. I saw all the hard work and dedication that it took for her to
compete and it inspired me. I decided to compete in the same show the
following year. At the age of 15 and having only weight trained and dieted for 3 months, I entered the ANBC Whaling City Bodybuilding Championships, which was the same show that my mother had won the year prior. I won best poser and the women’s overall. I stopped competing after my first show because life had different plans for me. Within the next eight years, I had three children, marriage, work, college, and the purchase of my family’s first home. During this time however I never stopped weight training.
It wasn’t until the fall of 2004, while attending Bridgewater State College,
which I was given that extra push that I needed to start competing
again. My professor and mentor Dr. Ellen Robinson had given me the confidence and encouragement I needed to compete again. I kept telling her that I wasn’t ready yet and that maybe I would compete next year, but she kept insisting that I was ready
now. The show was only one month away and I just had my third
child eight months before. I told her “I will put on a bathing suit and let you look me over and if you think I can be ready in time then I will do it.”
I met with Dr. Robinson and Mike Hludzik, a competitive bodybuilder, and they looked at my current conditioning and both agreed that I could be ready
in time. Mike suggested that I should meet with his nutritionist, Dave
Lyford, to help me with my diet. Dave has provided me with all my
pre-contest and off-season diets and has become a great friend. Dr.
Robinson helps me with my weight training, isometric posing, and
coaches me back stage during competitions, along with everything else in
life. I am really fortunate to have such supportive family members,
friends, and colleagues. Without them I wouldn’t have accomplished as
much as I have. I entered the ANBC New England Natural Bodybuilding & Figure
Championships and won the novice women’s best poser and overall, and the
open women’s overall. This show qualified me for the nationals for two
years. I was told that I should compete in the U.S. ANBC Naturals
Bodybuilding, Figure & Fitness Championships held in New Mexico one week
later and that I could probably get my pro. Card. My husband and I
decided to go for it! I placed first in the open women’s tall class and
obtained my pro. Card.
I then went on competing in the 2005 Muscle Mania Atlantic placing first
in the open women’s class. Then two weeks later, I decided to try an NPC
show, which was not drug tested. I wanted to see how well I could do as a natural bodybuilder against women who were not natural. The 2005 New England
Bodybuilding & Fitness Championship was held in Boston, MA. I knew realistically that I more than likely wouldn’t even place, but I wanted to try anyway. I was the lightest woman in the women’s heavy weight class, weighing 134 pounds. I ended up placing second in this show and the female that did win was 20 pounds heavier than me. It was a great competition and an awesome experience for me!
Why I Love It:
Many people ask me why I compete, and it’s kind of hard to explain, but I will do my best. I feel that everyone has their own unique gifts for example writing, drawing, making people laugh, or cooking. Some people find out what this gift is really early in life and become very successful at it and sometimes it takes others a bit longer to figure out what exactly it is. I feel that bodybuilding is my gift, my passion, what I was meant to do. And by no means am I trying to imply that I’m the best or better than anyone else, it’s what I do and it’s satisfying. I love the modeling, articles, interviews, and sponsorship opportunities that have come from it. I love to work hard and see the transformation of my body. I enjoy meeting others with the same interests and sharing ideas. In the off-season I love eating and getting ready for a strongwoman contest. I also like the fact that I can lift heavier and that the training is more sport specific. What I enjoy most about my lifestyle is that I feel alive, that life isn’t just passing me by. I know what I want and if I work hard at it, maybe I will be successful too. And even if it doesn’t end up the way I would like it to, at least I can say that I tried.
How I Stay Motivated:
So you ask what is it that I wish to accomplish or how I stay motivated?
Well let me tell you how it started…
It started as a dream to be known as the best natural bodybuilder (Ms. Olympia). I would tell my hubby Dino how I wished that I could be Ms. Olympia, but I didn’t think it was very feasible since it’s a normal show vs. a natural show. I have never and never will use steroids or diuretics, which I thought is what I would have to do to obtain that title. I told him that I would love to model and be in magazines. Then he said; so then do it!! My initial thought was that I shouldn’t even waist my time, it’s not going to happen. Then after thinking about how fast life goes by and what I want my children to learn from me, I came to a conclusion. I want them to be whatever it is that they want to be. I don’t ever want them to feel that any thing is impossible or unattainable. I want them to know that it might not be easy and they might fall, but it’s okay and you might even fail and that’s okay too! As long as you tried. Which brings me to think that if I am telling this to my children when I didn’t believe in myself it would not help reconfirm what I would like them to learn. I would have to show them through my efforts, hard work, and my down falls. And now I’m not dreaming any more, I’m working on achieving my goals.
