I would consider myself to be a triathlete first and a bodybuilding enthusiast second. But, have been a fitness freak forever. All my life I've been a "hard gainer" and have always been more interested in endurance sports than anything else. My body type is long and lean, so it's always been a good fit for me. However, within the last two years, I have been doing research on different types of strength training for endurance athletes. I've kind of taken a different approach and have incorporated lower reps, with higher weights as a lifting rule of thumb. the theory is that you are already training your muscles for endurance when you are swimming/biking/running. So there is no need to do the same thing in the gym. With high weight/low reps - you are training your muscles to be powerful and strong. Needless to say, this type of thinking is not the norm and most of my triathlete friends think that I'm a little crazy. The funny thing is that this season I had my fastest results yet. We'll see how it goes in '08.
Why I Love It:
Helps keep me in shape in the off season. And, it gives me something else to do, rahter than swimming/biking/running. I get enough of that from April-September. It also helps me keep up with my two boys (ages 7 & 5).
How I Stay Motivated:
For the most part, I'm self motivated. I've always kind of been a loner and enjoy training by myself. It's no big deal for me to get up at 4:00 a.m. just to train or get to the gym. But, when I need a little boost I go to bodybuilding/fitness sites like this one. All I have to do is go to the galleries and there it is...instant motivation.
BB Accomplishments:
None as of yet. I did have a guy at the gym come up to me and say that I was his motivation. That was very flattering and I appreciated the compliment.
Thanks, Bryan. U 2 have a great weekend. I think I am becoming a biking junkie:) Had my 3rd spinning class today. A different instructor - loved it! Awesome music, great routine, AND she whipped my butt! Now, sitting at home, I am looking at my bike and have to STOP myself from getting on it:) Is it normal?
Now, that's lean. I'd like to get my bodyfat percentage down to half that. I'm a runner and I'd like to try a triathlon someday. You are a good role model!
Bry--
I am very, very impressed. You have the trim, defined physique that I have always admired, Bigger is not always better. Thanks for the inspiration. I applaud you and wish the best for continued success.
