I had a friend who was really into lifting and I had never met someone as fit as he was. That motivated me to take my sporadic gym visits a bit more serious and actually put some thought into my workouts. He gave me tips, told me funny gym stories and made me want to go more.
A year later, my hair stylist introduced me to BodySpace/ Bodybuilding.com and I was overwhelmed (in a good way) by all the knowledge that was available to me on the site. I started following workout plans/schedules for the weeks, switching it up every now and again and the gym became my playground! I've never felt more strong and confident as I do now when I'm in the gym.
Now that there's structure to my training, I love going because I know where I'm going to start and where I'm going to end for the day's plan. It was a domino effect really, I'd read an article or feature, Google the person or plan, "like" them on Facebook and then use their tips for training and nutrition especially. I finally felt like my goals were and are attainable. Now I'm more so focusing on my nutrition, because that has been the hardest challenge for me, finding what foods should be limited or a definite no-no. I enjoy switching it up to avoid getting bored and distracted.
The challenge and progress of it all really excites me. I enjoy lifting more weight each week, that burn is addictive, it's true. I feel guilty now when I'm NOT sore. I too had subscribed to the commonly held notion that lifting weights was going to give me the bulky appearance. Now I'm and advocate for women moving weights!
I get pride out of being one of the only girls in the weight room with the guys...and I'm usually by myself, no guy with me holding my hand or teaching me. The trainers know me and are friendly but I never use them, Bodybuilding.com is my trainer! I leave the gym feeling renewed, refreshed and ready for the rest of my day. If I go after work, I only leave sooner because I work overnight and have to get to bed!
