I was on the Gluten-Free, Casein-Free diet for 3 1/2 years with my kids (Autism). It helped me enjoy cooking, dining, and life in a unique way! I want to get back to that way of doing things, and build muscle mass as I am able (see my goals).
Goal (Long):
I generally average about 30 lbs over weight. I want to be down to around 175 with muscle weight. When I was in my early 20's I had an opportunity to work in a paint factory lifting between 5,000 and 15,000 lbs a day. We did it all from mixing the pigments, resins, and solvents, to filling, boxing, and carting the paint, to cleaning 2000 gallon mixing tanks. The average temperature in the summer was about 130 F. The factory had a metal roof. So, we would do a lot of lifting all during the shift, and then go on break and play basketball like it was going out of style. That was a lot of reps and cardio. ---- It took me about 18 months, and I got down to being really cut. LOL! But I wasn't into body sculpting, so I didn't know what I looked like. I didn't even notice. What I did notice was when I went to college I started getting a little bit of fat that I could actually pinch between my fingers a few inches below my belt line, and I remember thinking, "Oh, oh. I am gaining weight." Does that tell you anything about how much body fat I didn't have? ---- Well, a lot has changed since then. In 1999, I had an accident that left me with a 30% chance of walking without a cane or a crutch the rest of my life. I had a type 3 Pylon fracture that split my right ankle into 6 distinct, individual pieces. It took me about 3 years to learn how to walk again without showing that I was in pain and another 4 years to walk without noticing the pain as much. That accomplishment was about a year ago as a result of moving to Missouri. ---- Being in Missouri helped strengthen my ankles and also flex my ankles, seemingly to their extremes, as there are plenty of rocks to trip on around here. And, then there are the holes to get off-balance in. The holes are left over from the rocks that someone else tripped over and dislodged! *toothy grin* ---- If you look at the close-up of the x-ray of the front view of my right ankle (http://bodyspace.bodybuilding.com/img/5 38630/profilepic/40888orig.jpg), you can still see one of the fracture lines. It starts at the tip (to the right) of the top screw and goes diagonally up toward the left of the picture toward the small bone. Then, if the picture was bigger, you might could see where kept on trucking and split that small bone in half as well. ---- The bones have since bonded, but I have a lot of muscle and nerve damage. I am still grateful to still have a leg. In the olden days, I am almost certain they would had thought amputation was the only remedy. ---- Now-a-days, I can walk very well and even skoot quickly in short distances in what appears like some kind of an odd-looking jog if I need to (ie keeping the kids from running into traffic as the rest of us are getting out of the car). That usually hurts later on. ---- I have a desirable metabolism that I think most people wished they had as I can eat a lot of wrong things and not pack on much fat. My heart rate is generally in the low 40's/bpm. That has helped me all of my life in athletics as far as doing long distance things (when I was in shape). ---- I'd really like to get back to the cut look and feel that I had when I was in my 20's. I also worry about losing more mobility as I never know how I will feel from one day to the next anymore. I understand that with immobility comes more body fat, and I don't need that kind of weight on me. ---- I am really not sure how to go about getting where I need to be. I am in the process of building an addition on to our house, so that helps with moving around. I do a lot of light stuff like that ... things that don't require a lot of shuffling here and there and everywhere else. I can't walk everyday with my wife though. That bothers me a lot. The arthritis in my ankle doesn't give me much vertical elevation. The best I can do is walk slowly. She needs to walk quicker than I do ... actually, she wants to jog. I've threatened to ride a horse while she walks! LOL!
I'm going with a Bodyfat Goal: goal of 12%. I haven't researched it, so I really don't know what my goal should be. In college, I think the ideal was 10%.
Well, it looks like things are getting easier for me concerning my ankle. I've been doing a lot of yard work, and "knock on wood" it seems that I am sleeping better and not waking up as stiff. I haven't started a workout routine as of yet, but I am still surfing bodyspace.com and...
Thank you for the reply. My wife is doing great and you can visit her at her bodyspace under the name judimax and see how she has managed to transform herself. Keep up the great work and stay in touch.
You have overcome a lot and are making great progress each and every day. Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching you achieve your goals.
