Martial Arts teacher at University encouraged us to do weights to strengthen our muscles.
Why I Love It:
I have found that the discipline and principles one learns in bodybuilding transcends into other areas of one's life - like at work, relationships etc. Because a very important leg in the development of one's physique is DIET, success is determined to a large extent on the principle of moderateness ... and not seeking excess ... excess in any form ..whether it be in eating ... drinking ... partying etc. I find it helps one FOCUS and concentrate with 100% effort on the task at hand. If you don't then, you either don't lift the weight you're supposed to or increase your chances of getting injured. So, concentration/focus is vital ... and this ability, once harnessed allows one to apply it, say ... in a social situation .. giving your 100% attention to whoever you are talking/interacting with. The principles learned in bodybuilding allows one to develop the 'mind-muscle' connection and helps you strive to be a better person - physically, emotionally, spritually; socially and intectually. I believe a "FIT BODY = FIT MIND".
I believe everyone should invest in strength-training programme of some sort as evolution theory suggests that we human beings are meant to active and meant to 'working' those muscles that allow us to do the everyday things with ease. I believe, investing in one's health via resistance training/bodybuilding is like superannuation ... you invest NOW for the future ... as just like saving for your financial health in old age ... the RETURNS come later ..
I look at it this way as well ... if your muscle-strength goes .. you won't be able to move your joints and limbs and .. in the extreme one won't be able to maintain one's fitness and health and ... then like any car that has not had regular service maintenance ... one will 'break down' and then health complications will set in ... and well ... we've seen the result of excessive eating/indulgence/lack of physical exercise in the many health TV series and reality shows that bombard the media endlessly today. Put simply IF YOUR HEALTH GOES ... YOU CANNOT MAKE A LIVING/EARN MONEY.
Bodybuilding allows you to dream .. to visualise ... to strive for perfection ... to announce to the world through your actions (and how you look) that ... you RESPECT AND LOVE YOURSELF. Some people may think that this is vein but I think that one can only genuinely respect and love others if one loves oneself first. So let people talk and ... believe misconceptions about life etc ... that is running strife in today's society.
I have so much to say .... so little time ... I could write a book but essentially, if you've got this far in your reading of my words ... I commend you. Thank you.
Another thing I love about bodybuilding is that it teaches you to be patient. Yep, patient. For someone who wants 'overnight success' in the development of their ideal physique .. well, bodybuilding is not for you. Theres no magic pill .. theres no magic formula.... theres only HARD WORK! It is consistent application of the principles of gradually increasing weight/resistance ... over time ... with good form. EFFORT = RESULTS!
There is just so much I love about bodybuilding ... so much. I will share my thoughts later ... cheers!
How I Stay Motivated:
Setting, visualising and ... striving the best physique and mind I can reach.

Goal (Long):
One of my philosophies is: "FIT BODY = FIT MIND". There is a definite mind-muscle connection that is 'fine-tuned' each time you focus on the muscle during each workout. One of my major goals is to know 'who I really am', if it takes my whole life and ... harness the energies within the mind ... and hopefully allow these thoughts/energies manifest itself physically.
In saying this, I also believe that bodybuilding is a metaphor, if you like, for LIFE. Its about setting goal(s), honestly assessing where you are and formulating and then, more importantly, implementing the plan to achieve those goal(s). It is the toughest sport anyone could ever hope to play ... because it is 24:7 ..... and constantly in flux. A challenge for everyone hoping to improve themselves on a daily basis for the rest of their lives. I strive for constant improvement ... improvement in all areas in life ... and bodybuilding allows me to have a benchmark ... a benchmark of habits ... and consisency and discipline and focus that ... translates into other areas of one's life. I could go on and on ... but I won't ....
One of my medium-term goals(next 2-3 years) is to put on quality lean muscle-mass (approx. 4-5 kg), whilst keeping in mind symmetry and astheticness. I do not want to put on additional muscle/size at the expense of symmetry as I believe, when you do that, you move away from the true 'essence' of what it means to be a bodybuilder and that is ... that you are AN ARTIST. Just like a sculpturer would carve his creation out of a piece of wood/metal into a beautiful, balanced piece of art work to be admired ... so does a true bodybuilder sculpt his woood(his body) to the best art work he can possibly shape.
My long-term (next 10 - 20 years) is to compete in as many contests and win all of them.
A WIP for the rest of my life .... fantastic stuff!
Cheers all!
