I go up to 600gs not including portien from oats and other sources away from my protein foods. So probably 700gs... To get to 400gs - 8 meals times 50gs...easy. Or 6 meals with about 70g's...easy. It is massive amounts of protein that builds muscle. Make your body grow...give it no choice. LOTS of guys do what I'm talking about here.

I think if you focus your diet on hammering down the protein and keeping that very high. At least 400gs a day. Then you can add low gi carbs and healthy fats from there depending on how much you need as an individual. If you gain fat pretty easy then keep the carbs to your first couple of meals of the day and then switch to fats of just protein w/ green veg. Definitely concentrate on protein though. High quality stuff and lots of red meat.
